MONDAY MEMO
During a scene rehearsal period recently, Will helped 6th graders Phoenix (Babette) and Jasper (Lumiere) and 7th grader Russell (Cogsworth) talk through the fight scene as they staged and rehearsed it for the first time.
Hello Riverside,

Lots to do to make the most of this last week before vacation. We hope your family has a fun and restful one. With time away from Riverside in the near future, it's also important to note the many program events coming up right after we return to school in March!

Happy Monday,
Nelia

NOTES
SPELLING BEE
Congratulations to all the 3-8th graders who competed in our school spelling bee last week! And thank you to the teachers who coordinated it and to the parents who joined the audience. All three of our winners will go on to the Vermont State Bee later this spring: 3rd place 8th grader Kellan Bristol, 2nd place 7th grader Conall Kennedy, 1st place 6th grader Phoenix Newell.
BRING THE SPIRIT!
As part of the preparation for Winter Carnival on Friday, the 8th graders are hoping that the whole school will join them in celebrating this week!...
  • Wacky Wednesday with wacky hair and outfits
  • PJ Day on Thursday
  • House colors on Friday.
WINTER CARNIVAL & HALF DAY FRIDAY
This Friday, February 23 will be our annual Winter Carnival, a chance for the house groups to cooperate and compete while celebrating the "winter" season. We may have to make some modifications to the usually snow-inspired activities, but fun will be had in a spirit of patient leadership and supportive community nonetheless. Parents are welcome to join us for any part of the morning they wish, if they'd like to join in the fun!

The day will end with an early dismissal for all PK-8 students at 12:30. The PK Afterschool and K-8 Extended Day Programs will run until their usual end times. Please email McKenna or Sean if your child will attend and what time you plan to pick up so that they can plan the long afternoon accordingly. If we don't get any RSVPs, then we won't offer the program.
FRIDAYS IN MARCH
Middle School teachers are excited for full weeks of regular class schedules; we missed one ski day due to bad weather; and there is no good option for our swim program with K-2nd graders. All that being considered, here's how we plan to move forward with Friday afternoons in March:
  • March 8: K-5th grade downhill and x-country programs at Burke (pick up 3:00) and Dashney (3:15)
  • March 15: K-5th attend dress rehearsal of Beauty and the Beast at LI (pick up 3:00)
  • March 22: K-2nd grade downhill program at Burke (pick up 3:00)
  • March 29: K-2nd grade downhill program at Burke (pick up 3:00)
On days when there may be a conflict for families with pick up times in two locations, we will offer EDP at no charge for siblings for 30 minutes.
NVRH ART SHOW
Northern Vermont Regional Hospital is holding its biannual student art show, featuring local elementary and middle school students. Riverside is represented by 15 students in this year’s show! Choosing only 15 pieces was difficult, as we have many wonderful artists in our school. A variety of types of artwork was chosen, showcasing the work we’ve done throughout the year in both art class and in the art elective for middle school. Representing Riverside are the following students: Lazlo Lechuga (K), Willa Meyer and Lachlann Wolfe (1st grade), Hannah Mirkin (2nd grade), Mabel Perreault and Henry Early (3rd grade), Cedric Linehan and Dalton Wood (4th grade), Asa Drown and Antonia Montague (5th grade), Raya Mirkin and Liam Albritton (6th grade), Zora Kane-Tornquist (7th grade), May Holderby and Beatrice Garvin (8th grade). The show will be up until April 1st- please stop by and see it if you get a chance! Abby plans to be there from 5:00-6:00 on Wednesday, March 6 if anyone would like to browse the show with her and other Riversiders.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Mark your calendars and tell your friends! The middle school's production of Beauty and the Beast will be on Friday, March 15 at 7:00 and Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 at the LI Auditorium; admission by donation.

With less than two school weeks left until the start of our annual 6-8th grade Play Week, production electives are making great progress with their plans and designs, and rehearsals are progressing with students off-book and really considering the quality of their voice and intentions of their movements on stage. Parent volunteers -- if you'd like to help during Play Week or during performances, please reach out to Nelia with your interest and availability.

The week of March 11-15:
  • 6-8th graders will not have any regular classes, and work solely on the production.
  • 6-8th graders will be dismissed from the auditorium at LI at 3:30 on Thursday and Friday that week.
  • K-5th graders will attend the final dress rehearsal on Friday afternoon at LI and be dismissed from there at 3:00 (younger siblings may stay until 3:30)
CALENDAR: STANDARDIZED TESTING
We have finalized the dates for our annual Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program testing. We hope families can make it a priority to have students in school as much as possible during these testing days, so that we don't have to confuse the schedule or add teacher hours to handle make up testing.
  • 8th Gr Science: March 27
  • 6-8th Gr Math: April 2-4
  • 3-5th Gr Math & ELA: April 8-12
  • 6-8th Gr ELA: April 16-18
THE ECLIPSE
As you surely know, the Northeast Kingdom is in the path of totality for a solar eclipse on the afternoon of Monday, April 8. We are working on plans to have all PK-8th grade students doing related activities and watching the event at Heavens Bench on Darling Hill that afternoon. (Thank you to The Wildflower Inn for hosting us and to The Fairbanks Museum for providing us with glasses to protect all the students' and teachers' eyes!) Of course, parents are encouraged to be with us. Stay tuned for more information about pick up options and locations that day, but there will not be an EDP on campus.
VACATION CAMP OPPORTUNITIES
As we hear of programming for youth that's aligned with our own mission, we will share them here:
  • Winter World: Ages 4 – 5 (no extended day available) Snowflakes, hibernation, and animal adaptations are just a few topics we will dive into during this exciting week of winter camp! Campers will spend time outside looking for footprints in the snow, building structures, and playing games (as long as the weather cooperates). We will also explore the museum and check out the new exhibits in the Tang Science Annex!
  • Extreme Winter: Ages 6 – 8 (extended day option until 3 PM) How do animals adapt to survive the cold winter months? How can we stay safe during a blizzard or an avalanche? Are all snowflakes the same? Campers will discover the answers to these questions through games, science experiments, hands-on activities, and storytelling. This camp is an excellent opportunity to experience winter to the extreme!

Junior Ski Patrol: Sunday, March 3, organized by She Jumps and KEAP, for 3-8th grade girls who want to be introduced to ski patrol through workshops on first aid, weather, toboggans, etc. This event will encourage girls to learn new skills, take on challenges, and think creatively which we hope will develop perseverance and foster confidence.

Kingdom Kids Day at Burke Mountain: $10 each for lift tickets, rentals, and lessons on Monday, March 4.
