Kaiser Permanente’s plans to acquire Geisinger Health have opened the door to new value-based opportunities. Specifically, the proposed acquisition has the potential to create an accelerated path to value-based care and lead to significant shared learning, according to Linda Finkel, chief executive officer of AVIA, a two-sided healthcare innovation network. Last month, California-based Kaiser Permanente announced a definitive agreement to add Pennsylvania-based Geisinger Health to its new nonprofit organization, Risant Health. Geisinger would be the first health system to join Risant Health, which Kaiser Permanente created to expand value-based care through health system acquisitions. Risant Health will be headquartered in Washington, DC, and Geisinger Health will maintain its name.
Market strategies to drive transformation of healthcare delivery and payment towards value are at a cross-roads. In response, health plan VBC strategy success will depend on their ability to develop and deploy specialty VBC models.
Industry advancements in value-based care (VBC) have resulted in a meaningful restructuring of health plan and provider organizations, processes and capabilities. However, common outcomes are emerging across the industry—traditional value-based payment models are experiencing plateauing growth and financial return for health plans and providers are declining—forcing industry innovation on two fronts.
There has been a newfound effort to highlight and address the disparity in health outcomes for patients who belong to one or more marginalized communities. Opportunities for health and wellness are dictated by social, economic, environmental, and systemic factors, not by factors that are inherently genetic or physiologic. This means that the color of one’s skin, what ZIP code they are born and live in, the education they receive, the food and housing they have access to, and the jobs they hold are the primary drivers of one’s wellness and health outcomes. It stands to reason that anything that further exacerbates the chasm of economic and systemic opportunity will result in additional hurdles to achieving health equity. This creates a tremendous opportunity to apply the lens of health equity to the numerous strategic imperatives a healthcare delivery organization is already prioritizing.
I am a family physician, but I also have been a patient impacted by discrimination and inequities in our national health care system. I’ve experienced times when my symptoms were dismissed, and I was denied appropriate care due to bias. My story is not uncommon, and that fact alone should be concerning – yet another sign that we are long overdue for a paradigm shift in health care, one in which we recognize, understand and address bias and inequity in medicine. Fortunately, the best resources to move us toward this goal are already embedded within our health care system: family physicians.
