MI TriShare Child Care Pilot Program

The MI TriShare Child Care Pilot Program (TriShare) is an innovative approach to increasing access to high-quality, affordable child care for working families, while also helping to retain talent and removing one major barrier to employment.

Through TriShare, the cost of an employee’s child care is shared equally among the employer, the employee, and the State of Michigan — a three-way split — with coordination being provided regionally by a TriShare facilitator hub which in northern Michigan is United Way of Northwest Michigan! >>Read More

Paid Work Experience Program for Young Adults

Continuing in Northwest Michigan

NORTHWEST LOWER, MI—A program providing meaningful work experience and income for young adults is continuing in northwest Lower Michigan. Northwest Michigan Works! has received a $220,000 state grant for the Young Professionals program. The program provides young adults with job skills, earned income, and career exploration and preparation activities.

Northwest Michigan Works! will continue to partner with the Char-Em ISD, Northwest Education Services, and Wexford-Missaukee ISD to offer the Young Professionals program. At Char-Em, the program will offer training and jobs in a variety of industries including automotive, construction, IT, landscaping, and power sports. Northwest Education Services and Wexford-Missaukee ISD will each offer welding classes.

"Programs like the Young Professional program offer both the student and business owner a low risk opportunity, where the student can apply skills learned through our CTE programs in a real-world work environment provided by the business owner, which can result in a longer term employment arrangement beyond this program," said Jim Rummer, Director of Career and Technical Education at the Char-Em ISD.

"The Young Professionals program has had a significant impact on those students who participate," said Tim Rigling, Assistant Superintendent of Career and Technical Education at the Wexford-Missaukee ISD. "Not only are the students learning a valuable skill in our welding program, they are also gaining confidence, self-esteem, and practical "life skills" along the way. Students are able to explore a possible career path while being paid for the experience; without which some would not be able to participate."

The Young Professionals initiative is designed to reduce youth unemployment and place young adults, ages 14-24, on the right path to achieving lifelong economic self-sufficiency. The initiative supports young adults who are struggling to obtain employment by exposing them to multiple career and educational opportunities, such as entering a Registered Apprenticeship program, earning a college degree or certificate, and obtaining sustainable employment.

People Fund Grant Applicant Letters of Interest Due April 1

The Great Lakes Energy People Fund is accepting letters of interest and grant applications from non-profit organizations throughout its service area for the spring grant cycle. Letters of interest are due by April 1. If the letter of interest is approved, the applicant can then submit a grant application by April 15. All letters and applications are accepted through an online grant application portal that can be found at gtlakes.com/people-fund.

Great Lakes Energy members support the People Fund by agreeing to have their bill rounded up to the nearest whole dollar amount. That extra change is then pooled with contributions from other People Fund participants and returned to the community through grants to non-profit, charitable organizations that provide humanitarian, educational, or community development services within the cooperative’s 26-county service area. Since 1999, the People Fund Program has awarded more than $4.2 million in grants to charitable and community organizations to help them better the lives of residents in local communities. The People Fund awarded more than $258,000 in grants in 2022.

Non-profit organizations that serve communities located in the Great Lakes Energy service area are eligible to apply. More information about the People Fund program, including organization and grant eligibility criteria, and lists of recent grant recipients, is available online at www.gtlakes.com/people-fund.

Letters of interest are due by April 1, with applications due by April 15. Another grant opportunity will be available in October 2023.

Paddle Antrim is pleased to announce they are accepting applications for their 2023 Spring Ripple Effect Mini Grant Program. This competitive grant program funds projects that protect the waterways and connect people to them. Potential projects must focus on stewardship, education, or increasing accessibility to the lakes and rivers.

Since 2015, Paddle Antrim has awarded over $30,400 to 21 projects that have made an impact on over 10 communities. To be considered for the grant program, projects must be focused on the Elk River Chain of Lakes watershed or adjacent watersheds which impact Antrim County. Eligible applicants include Michigan-based non-profit organizations or governmental entities. Past projects include the installation of a rain garden in Ellsworth, the design and installation of new interpretive panels for the Grass River Natural Area’s Nature Center, and funding towards the installation of the first universal access kayak launch on The Chain of Lakes Water Trail at Milton Township Waterfront Park. A list of completed projects funded by this Mini-Grant Program can be found at  www.paddleantrim.com/completed-projects.

"The Ripple Effect Mini Grant has supported important projects at Grass River Natural Area that have improved our educational programs and land management, supported the safety of our staff and visitors, and assisted us in reaching a broader audience in showing people the importance of the Chain of Lakes watershed,” said James Dake, Education Director at Grass River Natural Area. The Grass River Natural Area has been a recipient of several of these grants over the years.

The 2023 Spring Grant round will fund a total of $1,000 - $3,000 for eligible projects. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm on Monday, May 1, 2023, to be considered. Final decisions are announced in June. More information can be found online at paddleantrim.com/ripple-effect-mini-grants.
