June 14th: Northern Stage’s Summer fun begins with "Sense and Sensibility”.

A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters – sensible Elinor and passionate Marianne – after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. Sense and Sensibility examines our reactions, both reasonable and ridiculous, to societal pressures. When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?  Learn More

Join us at the Center Meeting House for a showing of the documentary film by Ray Asselin on Monday June 19th at 7pm. The film highlights the rare, exemplary forest on Mount Sunapee, the early history of its protection as Forest Society’s first reservation in 1911, and a current in-depth look at the forest, featuring commentary by terrestrial ecologist Chris Kane (who rediscovered the Old Forest in 1997) and Dave Anderson Senior Director of Education for The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. Part of the Center Meeting House & Newbury Public Library Collaborative Speaker Series.

June 20: Tapestry Tuesday.

John C Porter to present at CFA Tapestry Tuesdays June 20th

The Center for the Arts is happy to announce the next program in its Tapestry Tuesday series of presentations. On Tuesday, June 20th, at 5:30 pm, John Porter will speak on “The History of Agriculture as Told by Barns” at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 52 Gould Rd., in New London, NH.

“Barns can tell us a great deal about the history of agriculture in New Hampshire” says Porter. In the colonial period, New Hampshire was a rural, agrarian state and small subsistence farms dotted the landscape. An important part of these farmsteads was the barn, which housed animals and stored crops. Early barns used traditional building methods and followed the English barn style, with a low-pitched roof and doors under the eaves. As time went on, the farms expanded to accommodate changes in agriculture.  LEARN MORE
