Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

Sheri and Carlin Hagen

By Terra Avilla

Oh, how my eyes welled up with tears this past Sunday at church as two of my favorite people stood on stage to tell us that their time in Lassen County would be ending soon.

Sheri and Carlin Hagen, have earned a reputation for their unwavering kindness, selflessness and dedication to making their community a better place.

whywelovethisplace image

Both Sheri and Carlin embody the true spirit of compassion, demonstrating it in very different ways, yet both have touched the lives of countless individuals.

I will truly miss Sheri running around the church, going above and beyond with the children’s ministry. That woman has true patience. Instructing the instructors as well as corralling the littles that are running amuck.

And then there’s Carlin, who I first met when he taught music to the creative students at Lassen High School. When he stopped teaching at the high school, he still continued to bless others with his musical abilities, volunteering his time to bring music to the youth programs at the church.

They clearly have a very unique gift for ministry to children, and our county was incredibly blessed to have them for as long as we did.

The two of them are about as cute as it can get in reference to being a married couple. Just complete respect and admiration between the two of them. I have watched them for many years and, whether they know it or not, I looked up to them and their marriage in so many ways.

You just can’t help but feel safe when you are around either one of them. It is a very rare characteristic and one that I will miss so much when they leave.

The impact of Sheri and Carlin Hagen’s selflessness has not gone unnoticed. Their compassion has been recognized through numerous community accolades, highlighting their exceptional commitment to service. However, it is their humility and genuine desire to create positive change that truly sets them apart.

In Sheri and Carlin Hagen, Lassen County has been blessed with two remarkable individuals whose kindness, empathy, and commitment to serving others are an inspiration to us all. Their unwavering dedication to making a difference has made Lassen County a better place, and their legacy will continue to uplift and inspire future generations.

Mr. and Mrs. Hagen, I know that on this new part of your journey, you will be an absolute blessing to whatever community you are a part of, but I want you to know that you two will forever be two of the reasons I love where we live.

Crews Plan Hazard Tree Removal

Along Bizz Johnson Trail

In an effort to ensure the safety of trail users, Bureau of Land Management crews have announced their plans to remove hazard trees along two sections of the Bizz Johnson Trail beginning Thursday. The removal operations are scheduled to take place on two days, May 18th and 19th, and will not result in any trail closures.

Crew members may temporarily block areas for safety while work is underway.

Crews will be working along the trail just west of the Devil’s Corral trestle, about seven miles west of Susanville, and in the Hobo Camp Day Use Area on the west edge of Susanville.

Work will continue on a more limited basis over the next several weeks until all the hazard trees have been removed.

The trees are dying or dead from drought impacts, insect infestation and other factors.

Fire Department Investigating

Vegetation Fire Near Susan River

A swift response from the Susanville Fire Department, and a collaborative effort with multiple agencies, prevented a brush fire near the southern city limits from gaining headway Monday afternoon. At approximately 2:30p.m., SFD units rushed to the scene behind McDonald’s, where the fire was initially reported.

Upon arrival, the crew of Engine 628 reported smoke in the area behind Safeway, near the Susan River Bike trail. It was then observed that the fire was on the old Mill Property and had jumped the river into the city.

“E-628 with assistance from Cal Fire and Lassen National Forest, deployed hose lays to stop forward progress and contain the fire,” explains Fire Chief James Moore.

“Forward progress was stopped, crews cut hand line and performed 100% mop-up. The fire was extinguished at just over an acre.”

According to Chief Moore, the cause of the fire was determined to be human-caused and is currently under investigation. There were no firefighters or civilian injuries.

The Susanville Fire Department was assisted by Cal-FIRE, Lassen National Forest, Janesville Fire Protection District, Susan River Fire Protection District, Susanville Police Department, and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department.

Selections Made For Susanville’s ‘Little League’

May 17, 1951

Four teams were picked Monday night for Little League baseball, averaging 18 players for each team. Teams were chosen from the more than 200 boys between the ages of 8 and 12 years.

Remainder of the boys not making the four teams were chosen for farm teams, giving all the boys a chance to play baseball.

Managers bought the players with points, each manager being allowed 36,000 points with which to buy 18 players, starting at 50 points for younger players and averaging up to 1,000 for older boys. Each manager paid 10,000 points for two pitchers.

Little League baseball will officially open Monday evening, June 4, on the Little League field near the Lassen Lumber & Box Co.
