HV Annual Meeting Recap

The Homestead Valley Annual Meeting was held at the Center on Saturday, January 27th. The event started with a potluck and many delicious appetizers, snacks and treats brought by generous HV neighbors. We were so happy to see a few families who are brand new to the valley - welcome!

During the meeting, we heard updates from the following Homestead Valley Boards and Committees: Community Association, CSA#14, Land Trust, Sanitary District and Firewise and the Safety Committee. County Supervisor Dennis Rodoni also attended and gave us information about the latest happenings in the County and answered questions from the audience. We acknowledged the hard work of our General Manager, our Board members and all the volunteers who make our valley the best around. See below for more information on this year's Annual Service Award winners.

As always, if you are interested in joining any of the Homestead Valley Boards, we are open to fresh faces and perspectives so please reach out to Jonnie@homesteadvalley.org and he can point you in the right direction.

Thank you to all who attended the Annual Meeting!

Local Artist Series

Carol Jacobsen

Carol Jacobsen has been drawing and painting since childhood. Her art education started at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and continued at the College of Marin when she moved to the Bay Area in 1979. Jacobsen had a career in the tech industry before she became a full time artist in 2012. Since 2020 she has painted over 100 portraits in her Women of Color and Accomplishment series. The series is colorful portraits of African American women who have overcome obstacles of race and gender to achieve their dreams. This show contains 17 of these portraits painted between 2022 and 2023. Having these portraits in this wonderful space allows people the time to absorb the stories of these overlooked women.

Jacobsen has lived in Homestead Valley for 40 years. She has also published five books, two about the Women of Color and Accomplishment series.

Congratulations to our 2023 Service Award Winners

Volunteer of the year: This individual is recognized for their outstanding contribution of service and leadership in and around the community during the past year.

This year's winner embodies all of these qualities and more. She joined the Board five years ago and her list of contributions is incredible. From planning our holiday parties, managing the local artist program, taking on the redesign of our website and stepping in to manage the office and daily operation of the center, following the departure of our previous GM. She then stayed on to assist with the transitioning of the new GM, Jonnie Alper, and has continued to be instrumental in his success in this position. She selflessly gives her time and energy without fanfare and her calm demeanor makes her a pleasure to work with. HVCA and our entire community run like a swiss watch with her involvement and we are lucky to have her.

This year's Volunteer of the Year is Rachel Carlin.

Distinguished Community Service Award: This person is recognized for their continued dedication, extraordinary service and inspiration to our community (while also giving generously of their time and effort).

This person has given generously of her time to the HVCA Board and Community for many years. She has served as the HVCA Board President and on numerous committees during her time on the board. She was instrumental in developing our amazing native gardens and is currently involved in leading the meadow restoration project, which has been a long time coming. She has served on the CSA-14 Board and has become an expert on the guidelines and bylaws that govern the HVCA. This person has worked tirelessly on the monthly Homestead Headlines and also been instrumental and involved with the redesigning of our website. And if that's not enough, she has managed to develop and maintain long term relationships with Marin Horizon School, the County of Marin and the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce. Her dedication to Homestead Valley and the HVCA is enthusiastic and tireless. The residents of Homestead Valley are lucky to have her as a friend and neighbor as she is continually thinking of ways to improve things around the Center and Valley as a whole.

This year's Distinguished Community Service Award winner is Leslie Dixon.

Homestead Valley Vignettes by Chuck Oldenburg

LaVerne Heights

The Mill Valley Library’s History Room has an interesting map entitled, “LaVerne Heights Mill Valley Marin Co.; J. W. Wright & Co. Exclusive Agents.” This map would have been shown to someone interested in buying one of the lots for sale in a subdivision between Montford and Edgewood in what is now the Pixie Trail area. There is no date on the map, but the library label suggests it dates from 1920 -1930. My guess is 1910 – 1920, because the then old Public School is shown on Janes Street, and a house is shown where the new Homestead School opened in 1921.

The map shows the location and dimensions of each of the 175 lots on 9 new streets, along with fanciful depictions of nearby residences and sales-oriented statements of questionable validity.

The lots were located on streets with unfamiliar names. Pixie Trail was named Marin Ave. Upper Pixie Trail starting at Edgewood was named Bolinas Ave. The open space trail connecting Upper Pixie Trail with Hart Lane was named Wright St. Hart Lane was named Portola Ave. The unnamed lane parallel to Hart Lane at the other end of Cecily Lane was named Fiesta Ave. The open space trail from the Edgewood gate to the bench on Pixie Trail was named Pacific Ave. The open space trail from the corner of Edgewood and Cape Court to Pixie Trail was named White Ave. Cape Court was named Plymouth Rock Ave. Seymour Lane was named Seymour Ave.

Several houses are indicated, including Capt. Watson’s where the two Pixie Trails meet, Capt. Robinson’s on Edgewood, and the Stolte and Ferguson homes at the end of Montford. The drawings depict these homes as being much grander than they actually were at that time.

Also shown is a scene of “The beautiful view of Mt. Tamalpais from La Verne Heights.” Only a few lots on Edgewood would have such a view. Next to the railroad on Miller Ave. are the notes, “Fast electric train 1/2 hour service to San Francisco” and “Northwest Pacific electric 15 minutes to Sausalito.” This implies a 15-minute ferry ride – impossible. At the corner of Melrose and Montford is the note, “To Locust Ave. Station – 5 minute walk.” A lot purchaser was expected to walk fast. On a street named Park Ave. which connected Edgewood with Miller is the statement, “900 ft. to Park Ave. station.” Nothing about the uphill climb on the way home.

Today, most of the LaVerne Heights subdivision is open space with a few houses on the periphery. Homestead Valley residents should be pleased that the subdivision did not turn out as planned, although the dirt roads cut in the hillside 80 years ago still exist. Eric Krag eventually acquired most of the land for his Rancho del Topa and sold it for Homestead’s open space.
