Hygieneering recently provided indoor air quality assessment services to a residential high-rise that was impacted by a fire event. Both our expertise in mold & moisture assessment and post-fire remediation assessment services were utilized. Hygieneering provided oversight to the general contractor, remediation contractor, and drying contractor as to best perform mold remediation in this complex loss situation. Additionally, Hygieneering provided assurance to the building occupants that the fire-related cleaning was conducted in a thorough manner by performing independent assessments in the portions of the building affected by the smoke from the fire.

Code Red Air Quality Alert
In June, A Code Red Air Quality Alert was issued for several states from the Midwest to the East Coast due to the ongoing wildfires in Canada. If you had been outdoors at any point during that time, you were likely able to see a haze in the air and smell the smoke as well.
Wildfire smoke carries particulate matter, or PM2.5 – a tiny but dangerous pollutant that, when inhaled, can travel deep into lung tissue and enter the bloodstream, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The particulate matter has been linked to a number of health problems including asthma, heart disease and other respiratory illnesses.
A Code Red Air Quality Alert indicates that air quality has reached hazardous levels and poses a significant risk to public health, particularly for sensitive groups, which include children, the elderly, and people suffering from asthma, heart disease, and lung diseases. Some adverse health effects may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; coughing; phlegm; chest tightness; and shortness of breath. The effects of this air pollution can be minimized by limiting time spent outdoors, staying indoors with the air conditioning running or wearing an N95 mask if you have to be outside for prolonged periods.
Residents are encouraged to check www.AirNow.gov for current conditions in their area.

An ammonia leak caused maintenance staff at Leddy Arena in Burlington, Vermont to be cleared from the building recently, according to WCAX. The Burlington fire department responded to the arena just after midnight. When they got there, crews found that a strong smell of ammonia was present. The building was then cleared.
Maintenance, operations and engineering activities in institutional and commercial facilities come with a host of hazards. From arc flash training and fall protection to ladders and personal protection equipment, front-line workers must constantly pay attention to threats to their health and safety.
Hygieneering can provide these and other training classes at our Willowbrook, IL training institute or onsite at your facility. Click here to learn more about our Environmental Health & Safety Training Services.
