Did you know that Davie Black, the inaugural President of the PGA of British Columbia, was a dominant force in Canadian golf during the early 20th century?
Born in Scotland in 1883, Black began his career as an apprentice club-maker before immigrating to Canada. He served as head professional at Shaughnessy Heights Golf Course, now Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, from 1920 to 1945.
Black's playing career was equally impressive. He was the runner-up in the 1911 Canadian Open, missing the title by just one stroke. He won the Canadian PGA Championship four times, in 1913, 1919, 1920, and 1921. In 1920, during the CPGA Championship at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, he broke the course record twice in one day, shooting a 68 in the morning and a 67 in the afternoon.
Beyond his individual achievements, Black played a pivotal role in shaping professional golf in British Columbia. He was instrumental in establishing the PGA of BC in 1931 and served as its first President from 1931 to 1933. His legacy is further honored by his induction into the PGA of Canada Hall of Fame, Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and the BC Sports Hall of Fame. The PGA of BC's Professional Development Award is named in his honour.
