LaGuardia Hosts Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) for 37th Year

LaGuardia is proud to be a site for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), the nation’s largest youth employment program, sponsored by the New York City Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) for the 37th year. LaGuardia’s SYEP, the largest single-site location citywide, will serve more than 4,000 New Yorkers in 2025, providing them with their first job and valuable professional experience. The six-week program runs from July 1 to August 15. The program is currently searching for worksites. “We seek offices to support, guide, lead, and mentor SYEP participants. Hosts benefit from the fresh perspectives SYEP youth bring, with no financial cost as SYEP salaries are paid by DYCD,” said Dr. Claudia Baldonedo, Executive Director of Youth Workforce Development Initiatives. LaGuardia faculty and staff interested in being an SYEP worksite (with supervisor approval) should contact Kyle Peters-Hepburn at kyle.peters-hepburn@lagcc.cuny.edu or (718) 482-5034. Questions can also be directed to Dr. Baldonedo at claudiab@lagcc.cuny.edu or (718) 482-5236. If you know someone who may be interested in the program, encourage them to apply by February 28. Applicants must be NYC residents aged 14 to 24. NYC residents attending college outside the city are also eligible.

LaGuardia Theater Students Shine at KCACTF Region 1

LaGuardia Theater students have made a triumphant return to campus after attending last week’s Region 1 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Conference 57 at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT. They participated in specialized workshops, scholarship competitions, and networking sessions with representatives from four-year colleges and theatre organizations. The students excelled in the scholarship competitions, standing out among participants from four-year institutions and conservatories. Jaden Fabio won the top award for directing, earning a trip to the national KCACTF conference in Washington, D.C. this April. Michou Vital received two awards: the Outside-In Award and the Race, Equity, and Diversity in Design, Technology, and Management Award, for her scenic painting and poster design for Electricidad. Murilo Oliboni and Aliya Edwards won Best Ensemble in a National Playwriting Program staged reading. Xiomara Huerta was a finalist for the Musical Theatre Scholarship Audition. Two students reached the final round (16 finalists out of 160) of the Irene Ryan Scholarship Auditions: Abby Quevedo with partner Skyler G. Wiltshire, and Jason Rodriguez with partner Jermaine Parker. Skyler G. Wiltshire won Best Scene Partner, and Jason Rodriguez won Best Comedic Performance. Additionally, Aliya Edwards was named runner-up for The ASPIRE Arts Leadership Award. “We are incredibly proud of our students’ hard work,” said Theater Professor James Ryan (JR) Caldwell. “These accolades reflect not only their dedication and talent but also the strength of our theatre program. Explore the Cosmos: LaGuardia Physics and Astronomy Club's Stunning Stargazing Photos

The LaGuardia Physics and Astronomy Club, along with faculty advisors Drs. Daniel Capic and Roman Senkov (Natural Sciences), invites the college community to visit its Flickr page to view photos from recent stargazing events. These events allow students to “share in the wonder of the cosmos,” as Dr. Senkov describes, and capture stunning images through telescopes. Highlights include an image of Jupiter with its vibrant color bands and four Galilean moons, a project brought to life by students Ang Pemba Yonjan, Miguel Posada, and Miguel Pacheco. Another remarkable image captures a rare celestial event: a lunar occultation of Mars during the full Wolf Moon. During this extraordinary occurrence, Mars was hidden from view for several hours, a phenomenon so rare that the next similar event visible from the U.S. might not happen until 2042. Stay tuned for upcoming events hosted by the club.
