Hello Joanne,

I have learned that there are two types of parents:

  1. "YAY!" It's Summer
  2. "OH NO!" It's Summer

This email is for those "OH NO!" Parents. I can understand the "OH NO!" sentiment.

Summer can quickly fill up with endless days of kids crying that they're bored, sibling fights are the normal and there is limited structure to the very long days.

No wonder some parents dread summer break.

Keep reading for my top 3 ways to make this summer a creative, fun-packed season that will move you from an "OH NO!" parent to a "YAY!" it's summer parent.

xo,

Joanne

YAY IT'S SUMMER!!!

With a little creativity and planning, summer boredom can be turned into a fun and enriching experience for kids.

1 Manage Screen Zombies

It's easy for kids to waste away summer looking at screens. Setting time limits will help them unplug and make some true summer memories.

You can avoid screen time battles by creating and using your own summer screen time rules ahead of time.

2 Encourage Play

Set up a backyard water park with a slip and slide, sprinklers, water balloons, or a kiddie pool. Water play is an easy way to cool down and have fun on hot summer days.

Design a craft/exploration station to engage kids in various arts and crafts activities. They can paint, draw, make collages, create sculptures with clay, or try their hand at origami.

Take outdoor adventures. You can go on nature hikes, take a stroll downtown, have a picnic, play sports, ride bikes, or even have a scavenger hunt.

3 Keep Learning

Conduct science experiments. Kids can learn about chemical reactions, create volcanoes, build baking soda rockets, or make slime.

Involve kids in the kitchen and let them assist with simple recipes. They can make cookies, cupcakes, sandwiches, or fruit salads. Cooking together not only keeps them occupied but also helps them develop valuable life skills.

Take trips to the library and encourage kids to explore different books.
