The Friday Flash

April 18, 2025

We aren't the same when you are not here!

Friday Flash Notes for April 18, 2025

Dear friends,

Our Lenten journey is nearly ended, and we are now in the midst of the Holy Triduum. Last night at the Maundy Thursday service we reposed the consecrated bread on the altar in the downstairs chapel, to spend time in prayer and meditation with Christ as in the garden of Gethsemane. Tonight we will observe our Lord’s Passion, and on Saturday night and Sunday morning we will celebrate at the empty tomb.

I hope you can be present for these rich and meaningful liturgies. And don’t forget we’re serving breakfast on Easter Sunday at 9am before the service!

I offer you below some words from a famous sermon by St. John Chrysostom (347-407), which is recited every Easter in the Orthodox Church.

Wherever this Easter finds you, I wish you abounding joy and blessings and peace.

Peace and all good,

Fr Kevin+

From the Easter Homily of St John Chrysostom:

Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. He destroyed Hell when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh.

Isaiah foretold this when he said, "You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below." Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive.

Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see.

O death, where is thy sting?

O Hell, where is thy victory?

Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated!

Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down!

Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice!

Christ is Risen, and life is liberated!

Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead;

for Christ having risen from the dead,

is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen!

Father Kevin will be out of the office 4.21-4.25. In case of emergency please call or text. 607-351-3899.

Good Friday, April 18

Music is limited during this stark worship service. Although there is no prelude, postlude, or anthem we enjoy singing some lovely hymns: WERE YOU THERE, AH, HOLY JESUS (the text of which truly moves me), and SING MY TONGUE THE GLORIOUS BATTLE. The dark tones of the bassoon played by Wayne Gaver will enrich our experience.

 Easter Vigil, April 19

The service begins with the EXSULTET sung by Father Kevin. Five of the nine possible readings will follow, each accompanied by a selection of music. The first reading is The Creation FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH by Davis; The Red Sea SONG OF MOSES by Keyes sung entirely by Rhiannon Wimer; Isaiah 55 SURELY IT IS GOD WHO SAVES ME by White; Valley of the Bones DRY BONES a piano arrangement; Zephaniah SING TO THE LORD A NEW SONG by DeCesare. Join in ringing handheld bells during the Gloria. The offertory anthem will be CELEBRATE THE RESURRECTION STORY by Liebergen. O SACRED HEAD by Bennett during communion and PRAISE THE LORD RISE UP REJOICING by Kraft as a postlude. The closing hymn is COME YE FAITHFUL RAISE THE STRAIN Tune St. Kevin. A good time should be had by all.

Easter morning, April 20

AT THE LAMB’S HIGH FEAST WE SING by Kraft is our prelude followed by a short peppy introit with tones chimes by our choir. Yep, you guessed it, the first hymn is JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN TODAY Tune Easter Hymn. The offertory anthem will be a second hearing of the Easter Vigil anthem CELEBRATE THE RESURRECTION STORY. Communion is Bennett’s arrangement of WERE YOU THERE, the closing hymn #182 CHRIST IS ALIVE! Tune Truro. The postlude is based on our closing Vigil hymn COME YE FAITHFUL, RAISE THE STRAIN by Childs.

IMPORTANT MUSICAL EVENT

Our own lead choir singer, Rhiannon Wilmer, will be having her senior recital on

Saturday, April 19, from 2 to 4 pm in the Rooke Recital Hall at the Siegfried Weis Music

Building at Bucknell University. This event is free and open to the public. A strong St Andrew’s showing will be great way to give thanks for her beautiful contributions to our worship in the past 2 years!

Adult Formation Eastertide Book Study

How to Have an Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace, by Melissa Florer-Bixler

6 Sundays beginning April 27, 11:30am

Jesus called us to love our enemies. But to befriend our enemies, we first have to acknowledge their existence, understand who they are, and recognize the ways they are acting in opposition to God’s good news. Throughout the Easter season, you're invited to join this study of Mennonite pastor Melissa Florer-Bixler’s book, and discuss how we as faithful Christians can confront and love our own enemies, and learn to live deeper into Jesus’s way of reconciliation. If you are interested in being part of this book study, please sign up in the narthex, and please acquire your own copy of the book if you can. (If you need assistance, please let Fr Kevin know.)

  • Community Opportunity with international students. Are you interested in getting to know an international student better and support them during their time at Bucknell University? Please consider signing up for the International Friendship program, which matches one of our international students with an individual or family from the local community. You do not have to be from Bucknell to host. After initially being matched, you determine the extent of your relationship- depending on schedules and mutual interests. One thing that is very helpful that many international students seek is to experience US holidays together or getting off campus in general. Matches are made in a best attempt based on some shared interests, whether in religious services, playing tennis, or cooking, etc. Feel free to reach out to Heather in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services at ha009@bucknell.edu with any questions about the program. Apply here.

  • KEYS - If you have a key to any exterior or interior doors at the church please send an email to Tina with what type of key you have, ie master, shed. We are updating the records.
