CHATHAM MARCONI MARITIME CENTER OPENS NEW EXHIBIT FEATURING THE SS UNITED STATES, OTHER TRANSATLANTIC LINERS

Exhibition Features Images,Video and Items from the Conservancy's Collection

This week the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center in Chatham, Massachusetts, opens its new exhibit "The Golden Age of Trans-Atlantic Ocean liners."

This exciting installation will highlight six 20th century liners, including America's Flagship - the SS United States. Conservancy staff have worked with the volunteer-run museum over the past several months to provide information about the SS United States, as well as historic images, videos, and objects for display.

We were especially pleased to be able to loan this United States Lines flag from our curatorial collection for the new exhibition. The flag will be a central item in the new display. Later this year, the Conservancy will also be participating in a lecture series being hosted by the Center (details to follow).

We encourage our supporters to visit this exhibit, which runs through 2026.

"THIS IS SOMETHING AMERICA SHOULD BE PROUD OF."

In September 1968, Ray Aleksiunas, his parents, and his sister all boarded the SS United States for Germany.  As Ray tells it, "My father was a Major in the Army at the time, and we were moving from Chicago to Frankfurt. He submitted the SS United States as his requested mode of transportation for the family, and to his surprise it was approved.”

Recently, Ray came back on board America's Flagship during our former passenger and crew member tour. Reflecting on the ship and his voyage, Ray said in part, "This is a huge accomplishment in every way. It isn't a statue. This is the real deal."
