ADVOCACY UPDATES

The WMS Board of Trustees voted to significantly increase the role of members across the state in determining the association's advocacy positions and efforts.

WMS will preserve precious and finite political capital and resources by reserving public advocacy efforts, including public testimony, to those issues that gain 25% of WMS member engagement on THE WIRE.

REMINDER: Any member in good standing can submit a proposal on The WIRE for voting. If you don't want to submit it yourself, contact Sheila Bush in the WMS office who will work with you to ensure your proposal is posted for member input.

House Bill 195: Credit Reporting - Medical Debt (failed to pass committee)
House Bill 222: Medical Ethics Defense Act -2 (will continue in House Labor, Health and Social Services 2/3/25)
House Bill 164: Medical Prescription Off-Label Purposes (heard on House floor, passed on second reading)
House Bill 159: Protecting water from chemical abortion waste (placed on General File - tentatively scheduled for House Floor 2/3/25)

The House Labor Committee heard House Bill 222: Medical Ethics Defense Act today. They concluded public testimony and will work the bill first thing Monday morning.

The House Labor Committee also considered House Bill 195: Credit reporting:medical debt which was ultimately defeated on a vote of 3-5.

A minimum of 25% participation from active members is required before the position is communicated openly in advocacy efforts. The result does not necessarily change the WMS Board Advisory Opinion, as those opinions are based objectively on the established WMS Advocacy Tenets.
