This week, GBC testified in support of the Pava LaPere Legacy of Innovation Act of 2024. The Act seeks to make strategic investments in the Baltimore region's tech ecosystem to create a pipeline of innovation commercialization and enhance the competitiveness of the Baltimore Tech Hub Consortium’s Phase 2 funding application.

Baltimore's Transit Future

Last week, GBC Director of Policy and Research Nick Henninger-Ayoub testified at House and Senate committee hearings for Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT)'s proposed budget. His testimony emphasized the importance of MDOT maintaining and increasing its investment in transportation and infrastructure for the Baltimore region.

Collective Impact

Vacant Housing & Community Development

Last week, GBC CEO and Executive Vice President of Policy and Research Jennifer Vey testified in support of HB241 and SB308, respectively. These cross-filed Just Communities Designation bills will allow the State of Maryland to direct resources into communities that have experienced a long history of economic marginalization and disinvestment.

Public Safety

Last week, GBC convened its Police Officer Retention and Recruitment Steering Committee. This committee is assisting the Baltimore Police Department with strategies related to increasing the pipeline of candidates entering law enforcement careers and improving the overall hiring experience. GBC is also submitting written testimony in support of SB470 and HB597, which creates the Public Safety Apprenticeship Program and requires the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission to develop model mental health and wellness policies.
