Congratulations to GlobalMindED’s 2023 Inclusive Leader Award Winner for Technology: Michael Campbell
From humble beginnings in St. Paul, Minnesota, Michael Campbell's journey in international business has been defined by a relentless pursuit of learning, cultural immersion, and a commitment to making a positive impact in education. You can meet Michael at the Inclusive Leader Awards Dinner June 7, and on the opening plenary, The Future of Work, Tech, Learning, and Leading; From ChatGPT to OpenAI to AR/VR to Gaming, Closing the Equity Gap June 8 at 9 a.m.
Unexpected Turns and Liberal Arts Education
Michael grew up in a single-parent household with his two sisters. His mother, a hard-working nurse who immigrated from Jamaica, instilled in her children the belief that through hard work and education, doors would open.
Michael's academic journey took an unexpected turn when he encountered an admissions counselor from prestigious Carleton College during high school. Despite initially setting his sights on a big state university, he followed his intuition and embraced the power of a liberal arts education. This decision proved instrumental in shaping his future.
A Language Journey and Cultural Immersion
With his heart set on law school, Michael's trajectory took a remarkable turn during his time at Carleton—all because of a foreign language requirement. Michael chose to study Japanese, a decision rooted in his desire to explore something different and embrace the richness of a new culture. Little did he know that this choice would become a catalyst for his passion for international business.
Michael's decision to immerse himself in the language and culture led him to a junior-year exchange program in Japan, where he spent nine transformative months. Living with a host family who spoke no English, he navigated the challenges of communication and cultural differences, gradually honing his language skills and expanding his worldview.
An Internship and Unfinished Business in Japan
After graduation, Michael joined a small software company in St. Paul that had connections to Japan. Soon thereafter, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin to study international business formally. From there, an internship at Intel led to a full-time position with the corporate giant. This experience further fueled his passion for international business, and he soon realized that he had unfinished business in Japan. With unwavering determination, he seized an opportunity to work for the global technology company—this time as a local hire in Japan, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening the connection between Intel Japan and Intel US.
Soaring into Leadership
Embracing both professional challenges and personal milestones, Michael's short time abroad soon became a decade. Michael met his wife and started a family. As his career thrived at Intel, his aspiration to lead a team grew stronger. Seizing a management opportunity at Lenovo Japan, he relished the opportunity to lead a product organization of 50+ employees. This bold move propelled his career to new heights and ultimately paved the way for his return to Intel in a significantly higher position. Wanting their children to be fully immersed in the English language, Michael and his wife returned to the United States, and to Intel US.
Leading the Educational Technology Transformation
Drawing upon his international experience and passion for education, Michael assumed the role of General Manager of the education client business at Intel in 2020. In this position, he spearheads initiatives to improve learning outcomes and foster digital equity in the education sector. Michael's unwavering commitment to education drives his efforts to ensure that technology serves as a facilitator rather than a barrier to learning.
A Lifelong Learner
Driven by his curiosity and commitment to continuous learning, Michael recently embarked on an executive program in education with NYU, pursuing a doctorate in innovation and transformation. This academic pursuit keeps him at the forefront of educational trends and provides firsthand experience as a student, enabling him to empathize with the challenges faced by educators and learners alike. Reflecting on the lessons along his journey, Michael advises future leaders to approach life with an abundant mindset, be creative, stay persistent, and never stop learning.

Join us for a Premier Screening of "Beyond Their Years" at GlobalMindED Thursday evening, June 8, 2023!
|
|
Herb Carnegie and Buck O’Neil, two social justice icons that blazed a trail in sport and changed the world.
Herb Carnegie (Hockey) and Buck O’Neil (Baseball) were trailblazers but were nonetheless
excluded from playing in the highest professional leagues of the sports they loved because of their race. Instead of becoming angry and bitter, they channeled the injustice they both experienced into pioneering work that made their respective sports, and the world, more inclusive.
“Beyond Their Years” captures the effort put forth by amazing allies of all races who worked in unison towards the long overdue recognition of these two remarkable lives. The film will tie together their legacies and what they mean today in a verité style feature that teaches, heals and humanizes.
