The Life and Times of Saint Patrick

Think you know all there is to know about the real Saint Patrick? His life story includes kidnapping, invasion, slavery, religious controversy, assassination, and more, so join Irish historian Sean Murphy at 6:30 p.m. on Wed., March 15 for an insightful discussion about the most famous person associated with Ireland.

As the Patron saint of Ireland, he's recognized as having played a major role in the Christianization of the country. There are many myths and legends associated with him, and this program will look at the historical record based on available facts and accepted understandings.

Murphy also will discuss some of the writings of Saint Patrick.

Registration is requested but not required; please email Reference/Adult Services Librarian Libby Fox or call the Library at 508/946-2470.

Karen Land Dog Mushing Presentation

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to ride the runners behind a team of dogs, steering a loaded sled through mountainous terrain, crossing the vast Alaskan tundra, hugging the shoreline of the Great Bering Sea? What does it take to care for a team of Alaskan huskies? Could my dog be a sled dog, too?

Musher Karen Land will answer these questions and more when she and Noggin, the Alaskan husky, visit us on Tues., March 28 at 6:00 p.m. Land is a writer, public speaker, and three-time participant in the 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race as well as many other sprint and endurance races in Alaska, Canada, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Maine. Since 2000, Land has traveled to nearly every state with her Iditarod dog sled, mushing gear, Arctic clothing, and beloved dogs, giving more than 1,000 school and public library presentations.

Staff "Blurbs" What We've Been Reading

Periodically, we bring you a brief blurb from the staff about what we've been reading or watching.

This week, two recommendations from Head of Technical Services Lori Salotto.

The Bridge by Bill Konigsberg (2021): For high school readers and older.

Two teenagers, strangers to each other, have decided to jump from the same bridge at the same time. But what results is far from straightforward in this absorbing, honest lifesaver.

Aaron and Tillie don't know each other, but they're both feeling suicidal, and arrive at the George Washington Bridge at the same time, intending to jump. Aaron is a gay misfit struggling with depression and loneliness. Tillie isn't sure what her problem is -- only that she will never be good enough. On the bridge, there are four things that could happen in this astonishing and insightful novel.

Dreamland by Nicholas Sparks (2022): Lori listened to the audiobook version of this title.

Colby Mills once felt destined for a musical career, until tragedy grounded his aspirations. Now the head of a small family farm in North Carolina, he spontaneously takes a gig playing at a bar in St. Pete Beach, Florida.

But when he meets Morgan Lee, his world is turned upside-down, making him wonder if the responsibilities he has shouldered need dictate his life forever.

Meanwhile, Beverly is on a heart-pounding journey of another kind. Fleeing an abusive husband with her six-year-old son, she is trying to piece together a life for them in a small town far off the beaten track. And fate will draw all three people together in a web of life-altering connections.
