Panel at The LGBTQ Community Center Moderated by LaGuardia and Wagner Archives

On May 18, the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives held a panel on the New York City Council District 3, sometimes called the "Gay District," at The LGBTQ Community Center in the West Village. Moderated by Archives historian Stephen Petrus, the panel featured the four openly gay elected officials who have held the seat since 1992: former City Council Member and State Senator Thomas Duane, former Speakers of the City Council Christine Quinn and Corey Johnson, and current Council Member Erik Bottcher. Encompassing Chelsea, the West Village, and Hell's Kitchen, District 3 has been a hub of LGBTQ politics and culture in America for decades. The panel topics included same-sex marriage, AIDS services, decriminalization of sex work, drag story hour, and the funding of LGBTQ organizations. The event was a public program to supplement the Archives exhibit A Seat at the Table on LGBTQ elected officials in the New York City Council and the State Legislature.

LaGuardia’s Center for Immigrant Education and Training (CIET) hosted its first in-person Family Night on May 12 after three years of hosting the semi-annual event remotely. Approximately 100 students of CIET’s English and Immigrant Family Literacy Program attended the event, themed “Growing Together,” with their school-aged children. The program empowers English language learners—mostly recent immigrants—to advocate for their children at school, to provide homework support at home, and to become lifelong learners. The program is provided tuition-free, thanks to continuous support from the New York State Education Department for nearly 20 years.

Big Performances and Big Comedy at “Big Love” by LaGuardia’s Award-Winning Theater Program

Tomatoes were thrown, wedding dresses were worn, and a slow-motion seduction scene marked the recent production of Big Love by LaGuardia Community College/CUNY’s award-winning Theater Program. Big Love, a romantic tragicomedy, is a modern retelling of an ancient Greek play. New Yorkers and members of the LaGuardia community took in six lively performances that featured poetic dialogue, singing, dancing, and fight scenes, on a well-appointed stage outfitted with a cast-iron tub, flowing scarves representing the seaside setting, and an antique gramophone used to cue up music for spirited karaoke-style singing. The performances were staged at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC), May 17–20. Congratulations to the cast and crew!

Nutrition and Culinary Management Students Learn about Neapolitan-Style Pizza at Eataly

Fifty-eight students from the Nutrition and Culinary Management Program, directed by Dr. Nicolle Fernandes, attended workshops on May 18 and 19 at the downtown Manhattan location of Eataly, a largescale Italian marketplace and cooking school. They learned all about Neapolitan-style pizza and got to try their hands at making dough and pizza from scratch, cooking them in wood-burning ovens, and the best part, sampling the pizzas. The event was funded by a LaGuardia Co-Curricular Grant. Deliziosa!
