This exclusive release showcases innovative hops that are new to the craft beer industry, making it a must-try for all of you beer enthusiasts. Manilita hops will have the spotlight shone on them with this beer, this vibrant hop variant from New Zealand offers a bold citrus and citrus zest flavor profile with more gentler notes of grapefruit, papaya and red berries.
As one of the few locations receiving this beer—and with a larger allocation than any other store—we are thrilled to offer you the opportunity to experience it firsthand.

DOC MURPHY'S - NORBROOK FARM
Irish Red Ale
It was only appropriate to celebrate a festive Irish brew this week! One of my very favorites comes from local brewery Norbrook Farm, their take on an Irish Red Ale. It is malty, wonderfully smooth and ends on gentle notes of caramel and toffee that balance the beers natural but mild bitterness. Robust, rich yet delicate, it is the perfect beer to reach for this weekend! Sláinte!

THE HISTORY OF IRISH RED'S
In the 8th or 9th century, we found the earliest recorded mention of people enjoying a "red ale", the origin has been lost to antiquity, leaving Smithwick brewery to hold the title. They are believed to have created the first Irish Red Ale in 1710, in Kilkenny, Ireland. They began brewing a "red beer" that pushed the malt flavors forward while keeping the hop profile mild and playing a secondary role, thus being considered the origin of this classic style.
This brew is categorized by its reddish, copper like color and incredibly balanced flavors. This styles manages to fit the opposite ends of the spectrum together in harmony, a beer that is sweet but dry, robust and rich but delicate. This style typically has medium to mild hop bitterness, a moderate sweetness from the malt, and a grainy, dry finish from the introduction of roasted barely. This trifecta is to thank for the unique flavor profile, they play off of each other in an unexpected way to create an eccentric drinking experience.
Now, what gives this beer its iconic red color? Simplt put, the use of kilned and caramel malts and roasted barley. Malts that are kilned, specifically malts used in an Irish red as they are typically kilned at a higher temperature, not only give them a beautiful caramel, toffee flavor profile but provide the brew with its famous red tint. An addition of roasted barley further enhances and saturates the pour, leaving us with this fantastically festive beer.
While the very origin of this beer has been lost, regardless of where or who created this style, it is remarkable how it is continued to be celebrated. It is incredible to see how the creation of styles migrate, grow, change and find their space in the craft beer world. Whether you enjoy an imported brew or one of our local breweries take on this style, I do hope you can find yourself enjoying at least one Irish red this St. Patrick's Day weekend!
