Important Update: New UK Travel Requirement Effective January 8, 2025
December 12, 2024
Effective January 8, 2025, US, Canadian, and many non-European passport holders must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter or transit through the UK if they do not possess a valid UK visa. If you previously travelled with only your passport for routine trips you will no longer be able to without an ETA. Travelers must secure their ETA before departure to avoid flight boarding or UK entry issues.
Beginning April 2, 2025, the ETA requirement expands to most European countries. Some countries, notably China and India, are not eligible for an ETA and will continue to require a visa. For a full list of countries eligible for an ETA, please consult this list.
Key Details About the ETA
Purpose:
An ETA is required for short stays (up to six months) for purposes such as tourism, business, family visits, or short-term study. An ETA does not replace a visa for situations when one may be required (Internship, work, long-term study, etc.) and is not available for all countries.
Transit Requirement:
It is also mandatory for travelers transiting through the UK.
