Each year, the Easter Day Great Hour of Sharing offering supports transformative work in communities near and far. A portion of the funds is returned to our local area through Self-Development of People of Central Virginia (SDOP) grants, empowering grassroots groups to create lasting change.
Thanks to your generosity, SDOP of Central Virginia has recently provided grants to initiatives such as this year's United to Empower's Parents Empowering Young People and last year to its Empowering Young Leaders program. Located in Surry, Virginia, United to Empower's mission is to educate, enhance, and empower young people and communities.
From offering a wealth of affirming and supportive opportunities for parents to connect and support each other to recently opening a community facility, this organization is deeply dedicated to strengthening local youth and families. Their new facility, The Empowerment Center (pictured below) is a "small space for big opportunities" located in Wakefield, VA. Community members are welcome to access a food pantry, thrift store, and computers, as well as a wide range of safe and engaging community activities for all ages. The space is also available for local businesses to rent for pop-up events.
These projects, alongside others funded nationally and globally, uplift communities through self-help initiatives.
This Sunday is Self-Development of People Sunday! Be sure to check out these denominational resources to learn more. You can also read about other nationwide grant recipients in this Presbyterian News Service article.
Thank you for giving, and for helping build stronger communities through the Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People!

Good morning to “the James” from Hebron Presbyterian Church!
Hebron Presbyterian Church invited me to worship and fellowship with them on Sunday, March 2, 2025. I think it is safe to say they are nestled in “horse country.” Pastor Noah asked if I could present a short talk on “Presbyterianism 101” just after the announcements. I offered my understanding of who we are, thinking that after worship, they would tell me if I was correct.
Then, of course, we entered the Second Sunday of Lent, with a collective call to worship, the singing of hymns, wonderful piano pieces, the gift of forgiveness, and Pastor Noah Morgan’s exposition on Luke 4:1-13.
Following worship, we gathered in the fellowship hall for a light meal, some conversations, a little Q&A about the Presbytery of the James, and a time to share prayer requests and then prayer itself. It was a joy to share table fellowship with the folks of Hebron!
Two “sidebars...” One, I finally met Ben Lacy Rose. His portrait (photo below) was there, and it brought back a memory of work in the library at Union, transferring a “radio show reel-to-reel” to audio CDs. Some guy named Ben Lacy Rose was delivering messages to an audience, and the folks at Union felt they needed to be saved. I used the library resources to find out just who this person was and discovered that I was listening to a faithful servant, to be sure.
Two, I mentioned there was a meal; but, more importantly, there was CAKE. Good cake, by the way. Somebody there had a birthday that Sunday, someone that they liked, it seems. Can’t remember who, though, but it will come to me.
Oh, yes, it was Noah’s.
I now know two preachers at Hebron—Ben, whom I met via technology, and Noah, whom I met in real life. Both serving in one of our churches and keeping the Gospel within earshot of all who will listen.
Thank you, Hebron.
Thank you, the James, for offering me the possibility of being in your (our) congregations!
Blessings,
Kerry
