Social Action Committee (SAC) Presents a Climate Justice Movie

February 7, 2025 - 5:00 p.m.

Followed by a discussion after the movie.

The congregation is invited to a SAC event on Feb 7, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. There will be a mixer and light dinner of chili (meat and vegan choices), bread and something sweet. This will be followed by an engaging documentary film, "For Tomorrow," related to grassroots climate justice innovation, and a discussion.

Bring your appetite and an open mind! AND please invite your friends. Let's all come out and show our wonderful Social Action Committee some love. Climate change was the #1 most cared about issue on our last congregational survey. See you there!

“A Time for S/Heroes”

Larry Pearlman

From "A Time for Heroes" by Chris Foster:

"It's not an ordinary time,

Not an ordinary time at all.

It's a time for heroes,

Those who can face facts,

Though they sear like a red-hot iron

From the heart of a Pittsburgh furnace.

What hope, O world?

What hope, ye lands and seas and inhabitors thereof?

All will disintegrate, all will be gone..."

What is a s/hero? How can I be one? Is it even possible to save this world from this total disintegration? Let's consider together what it will take and how each of us can do our part to turn the tide.

“Faith & Belief”

Rev. Michael J. S. Carter

A non-creedal faith is often misunderstood to mean that its adherents have no shared beliefs at all. This misconception weakens us as individuals and as a collective. An open faith is not an empty faith, or a shallow faith. And an open well gives and receives but it is not empty. An open heart is not an empty heart. As a faith tradition we are open and fluid but we are not devoid of content. Many times, we as UUs define our theology by what it is we don't believe. If we are to move forward and share our tradition with the wider world, we must be able to articulate what that is exactly. After all, we are a "people of principles." Besides, there is so much to believe in. It's a new year--- let's begin.

Seeking Land For Cherokee Family

The Alliance for Beyond Land Acknowledgment is assisting a Cherokee family to find a small parcel of land in Black Mountain or Old Fort. The family’s long term rental home will soon be sold. The land may be gifted to the family as LANDBACK, which is a form of reparations for the centuries of harm done to Indian people. Or, the land could be sold to the family at a reduced rate.

Please contact Maggie Moon O’Neill for more information if you or someone you know has such a piece of land. Oneill.maggie9@gmail.com
