From the Minister

My Dear Friends—

Is it just me, or have the last few weeks seemed like a “greatest hits” parade? We’ve heard John the Baptist declare Jesus “the Lamb of God” and seen Jesus call the disciples to be fishers of people. We’ve listened again to Micah call us to do justice, love mercy, and travel humbly with God. And we’ve seen Jesus on the mount, beginning his famous sermon with those beatitudes at once familiar and confounding. Click here to continue reading.

From the Bench

The featured composer for our choral works this Sunday is English Renaissance man William Byrd. He converted to Catholicism later in life, a risky move for somebody dependent on the Anglican Church and royal patrons for his livelihood, and also not without risk of persecution. We will hear excerpts from his Mass for Four Voices, as well as his Communion-themed motet Ave Verum Corpus

The organ voluntaries are variations on the hymn Praise to the Lord by David P. Dahl, who had a long and distinguished career as professor of organ at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA.

Lenten Activities

Annual Pancake Sunday Breakfast Sunday, February 19, 10:00 AM – Noon, Parish House, 64 Beacon St.

Pancake Sunday, for us, marks the beginning of Lent. In days past, when people fasted during Lent, families often used up all their sugars, butter and other treats on the night before Ash Wednesday, making rich, wonderful pancakes. This day was called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). One last big splash before Lent.

The King’s Chapel tradition is to gather on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday at the

parish house, where our children and their parents make pancakes. We invite

the congregation to join us for the meal. It's an informal, fun event.

If you expect to attend, please let us know, by contact Laura@kings-chapel.org.

Save the Date: Mardi Gras Dinner

Tuesday February 21 at the Parish House

Our party team is planning another fun event! More information to follow next week!

Volunteers needed for Ash Wednesday imposition of ashes

Wednesday, February 22

On Ash Wednesday, we will again be offering the imposition of ashes to those passing by in front of King's Chapel. Volunteers are needed to assist David Waters, and there are slots available before, during, and after our noontime service.

Please e-mail Laura at laura@kings-chapel.org to sign up.

Living Lent: Scarcity or Abundance?

Book Group

Mondays in Lent, February 27 - April 3, 6:00 PM via Zoom

On Mondays during Lent, join your clergy to discuss scripture, poetry, and prose as we explore our theme, "Living Lent: Scarcity or Abundance?" The book we'll follow is Between Midnight and Dawn: A Literary Guide to Prayer for Lent, Holy Week, and Eastertide. Each week you will be offered a literature selection, a poem or story to savor or wonder about. Authors are both classic and contemporary, from Fyodor Dostoevsky and George Herbert to Tania Runyan.

There will be 10 copies of the book available at the Parish House library; let Lin Nulman, our office assistant, know if you'd like to borrow one.  It is also available on the web for purchase, new or used ($6 to $19). Please register here to participate.
