Keeping Kids Healthy: What to Know About Flu, RSV, & COVID-19 This Winter

Viral illnesses like colds, flu, RSV, and COVID-19 spread more easily in fall and winter, so we recommend getting the flu and COVID-19 vaccines soon. The Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity offers free vaccines—register here. Children should attend school if they're generally healthy, but students with severe symptoms like a heavy runny nose, persistent cough, breathing trouble, fever, or if they appear unwell should stay home. They can return when symptoms improve and they're fever-free for 24 hours without medication, and after COVID-19, we suggest wearing a mask for 5 days when back at school. More health guidance is available here. Testing helps reduce COVID-19 spread—find local testing sites here or visit covid.gov/tests to order free at-home tests.
