Well, dear friends, this month's newsletter is a testament to the "best laid plans" scenario. I was putting the finishing touches on this edition of Whale Spouts when I got a call that my mom had fallen while out for a walk ... and later discovered she had fractured four ribs in the process. Ouch! The last few days have been a whirlwind of love, care and prayer from a beautiful and broad community of support.

Then, this morning our precious 13-year old puppy Bear quite unexpectedly journeyed across the rainbow bridge. The house seems empty, our hearts are heavy, and I had forgotten how exhausting grief can feel. Bear was the completion our family never knew it needed... and we will miss him more than I currently have words to express.

So, now on this evening of the first Sunday of Lent, I finally send you these Ash Wednesday reflections with deep gratitude for your patience, grace and love. Peace, Sharon

Dearest Friends,

Blessings to all those who observe Ash Wednesday today as the beginning of our Lenten journey toward Easter Sunday.

And blessings to all of our Muslim sisters and brothers who are in the midst of the month-long season of Ramadan (February 28-March 29).

Both of these sacred observances are a time of increased devotion to prayer, attentiveness to God’s presence in our daily lives, and caring for those in need - important reminders of how our inner reflections guide our outer actions.

Amidst all the storms that are swirling around us in this tumultuous time, I pray that during these sacred seasons we will all listen deeply for that still, small voice within so that we can reach out to one another with justice and compassion for all.

In this month's newsletter, I have included a few words of encouragement as well as several invitations to inspiring retreats designed to help us be still enough to know and bold enough to go wherever God is calling.

As I enter into the season of Lent this year, I am choosing to journey through these days as a time of pilgrimage... walking intentionally with God each day toward Easter morning.

Be encouraged dear friends. Remember that God is not the storm that swirls around us. God is the still small voice standing with you in the middle of the storm.

"Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10

Whales live in every ocean on our planet. Yet, opportunities to see a whale don’t happen every day. If you want to see a whale, you need to know where to look and what you are looking for. You need time for waiting, watching and wondering. You need companions for the journey. You need patience and practice.

So it is with the Holy Spirit.

During this Holy Whale Watching Retreat, you will find the sacred space you long for so that you can slow down, dive deep and

watch for the Holy Spirit

Join my co-leader, Lindsay Harren-Lewis, and me as we explore creative prayer practices, deepen our understanding of whales, build connections with fellow seekers, enjoy sunset worship on the beach... and, of course, embark on whale watching adventures!

In only just a few weeks, I will be gathering with other pilgrims on my first experience co-leading the  Pilgrimage in the Belly of the Whale & Beyond retreat with Basia Goodwin of Flores del Camino Retreat Centre from April 22 - May 2, 2025. We will be exploring themes of sacred pilgrimage in our own lives, dive into Jonah's journey as pilgrimage, learn about sacred geometry (aka mandalas!) found along the Camino, and paint with pigments foraged from this ancient pilgrims' path.

Although the 2025 Retreat is full, there is still space available in the April 2026 retreat (although it is filling fast!). What a blessing it would be to share the Camino experience with you in Spain! I encourage you to register as soon as the Spirit nudges you in that direction so as not to miss out.

The Bottom Line Is Love

“What are you giving up for Lent?”

... is a question often asked on Ash Wednesday as Christians around the world step into this season of repentance, prayer and attentiveness to God. I must confess that I have often resisted this Lenten invitation to “give up” something and instead often chosen the more comfortable path of what I might “take on” for Lent such as a new spiritual practice like daily scripture reading, contemplative coloring or intercessory prayer.

This Lent; however, I am feeling nudged to "give up" the gnawing negativity that can so easily seep into my spirit and instead lean even more deeply into Christ's call to love ... not just my neighbors that I like and who are like me, but also my "enemies." This is no pie-in-the-sky, kumbaya, touchy-feely love. It is a gritty, sacrificial love-in-action that calls us to serve where the greatest needs are - even when it is not in our own personal "best interest."

Love is feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, tending to the sick, and visiting the prisoner. (Matthew 25:31-40). Love calls us out of our carefully crafted comfort zones and into the messy business of meeting the practical needs of the world. Jesus modeled this sort of deeply sacrificial love as he ate with sinners, included the outcast and offered forgiveness over and over and over again.

So... if I long to walk in the way of Jesus, what am I willing to “give up” this Lent in the name of sacrificial love, limitless forgiveness and radical inclusion?

Maybe I could give up...

free time so I can visit a lonely neighbor,

food from my pantry to feed someone in need,

money to help with medical bills for a struggling family,

assumptions I have made about those with different political views,

buying something I "want" to help with what someone else needs,

making insulting and demeaning comments about others,

my own smug self-righteousness,

and so, so much more.

As we journey together through Lent this year, maybe we can “give up” the temptation to envy, boast or dishonor one another and instead lean into the arms of God’s never-failing love.

Ultimately, the bottom line is not what is most profitable, efficient or comfortable.

The bottom line is love.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (I Cor 13:4-8)

PRAYER for this SEASON

A Blessing for Ash Wednesday by Jan Richardson

Will you meet us

in the ashes,

will you meet us

in the ache

and show your face

within our sorrow

and offer us

your word of grace:

That you are life

within the dying,

that you abide

within the dust,

that you are what

survives the burning,

that you arise

to make us new.

And in our aching,

you are breathing;

and in our weeping,

you are here

within the hands

that bear your blessing,

enfolding us

within your love.
