More Americans Own Their Home, but Black-White Homeownership Rate Gap is Biggest in a Decade,
NAR Report Finds

While the U.S. homeownership rate has continually increased during the last decade – to 65.5% in 2021 (from 64.7% in 2011) – the Black homeownership rate has not kept pace with increases of other racial groups. Also, people of color endure significant buying challenges throughout and even after their home purchase, according to a report released today by the National Association of Realtors®. |

Rooting Out Appraisal Bias

By avoiding the use of subjective terms and phrases commonly used in property marketing, appraisers can keep bias out of their valuation reports.
In May, REALTOR® Magazine published an article by the authors addressing steps the industry is taking to investigate claims of bias in the appraisal process and to address the causes. The topic made national headlines in December when the Federal Housing Finance Agency released a report saying it had found examples of valuation bias in an examination of millions of appraisal reports.

Business at the Capitol picked up last week with multiple REALTOR® watched bills going through committees. Colorado Association of REALTORS® testified on two bills last week; Portable Screening Reports (HB23-1099) andProhibited Agreements in Rental Leases (HB23-1095). CAR testified in opposition of HB23-1099 and testified as an amended position for HB23-1095, both bills passed through house committees but CAR will continue to advocate REALTOR® positions. CAR successfully held our REALTOR® Day Legislator Breakfast, we heard from a panel of multiple legislators who talked housing policy and legislation.
