Manufacturing Businesses: Do you need help
upskilling your Workforce?
|
|
The Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison & Oneida (WDB/HMO) has partnered with the NYCAN (NY College Apprenticeship Network) grant to reimburse on-the-job training costs for advanced manufacturing companies that have less than 50 employees and a registered apprentice program.
Wages can be reimbursed at 50% up to $25 an hour for six months of on-the-job training (OJT) with minimum paperwork.
The undirected funding provides many benefits for small to medium-sized manufacturing companies and ensures the apprentice is trained in accordance with the company’s standards and procedures.
If you would like to know how your company can take advantage of this funding or know of a company that would benefit, please contact Alice Savino at asavino@working-solutions.org

NYCAN Grant Program SUCCESS:
Apprentices at Advance Tool making progress toward satisfying
and good paying careers.
Manufacturing company Advanced Tool has a successful apprentice program to upskill their employees. The company participates in the NYCAN gran, which helps with on-the-job training expenses. Because Advance Tool is a company with less than 50 employees sponsoring apprentices in advanced manufacturing, they can receive up to 50% reimbursement of their apprentice's hourly wage for their on-the-job training for six months to help support their success and knowledge.
"Advanced Tool Inc is a cutting tool manufacturer specializing in engineered carbide end mills, form end mills and micro end mills for Aerospace, Automotive, Medical and Power Generation," says Sherry DePerno, President/CEO of Advanced Tool. "CNC Tool & Cutter Grinding is a very complex skill, it’s difficult to find people with experience. Starting an apprenticeship program shortened a two-year training process down to six months by developing curriculum that includes both classroom and hands-on training. An apprenticeship allows the company to hire someone with no previous experience, and no college education. It puts the employee on an exciting career path with above average earning potential and benefits."
CONGRATULATIONS, APPRENTICES! You are on your way to a great career!

Job Fair Success!
In partnership with MVCC, The Workforce Development Board's RADAR project and NY SCION project recently hosted an in-person job fair for individuals of all abilities. The event was open to the public. Local agencies that provide services to individuals with a disability were also on-hand to provide information on the services they provide.
Representatives from some 25 local businesses were in attendance to meet one-on-one with job seekers to take resumes and answer questions about current opportunities.
"The Workforce Development Boards RADAR & SCION grants were happy to host our first in-person job fair at Mohawk Valley Community College on Wednesday, February 15th," said RADAR Project Director Sommer Edwards. "We were happy to showcase a number of job openings in sectors such as the trades, manufacturing, public safety, healthcare, human services, and more.
"It was great to get back out into the community and meet with job seekers in the area. The Workforce Development Board has several grant opportunities available for those in need of free training or supportive services.
"We are providing assistance with resume writing and interview prep as well.
"It is clear there are so many wonderful opportunities available in Herkimer, Madison and Oneida counties. We look forward to providing more opportunities for employers and job seekers to come together and decrease the barriers faced to securing employment."

Manufacturers Offer More Flexibility, Child Care to Workers
In study recently released by the Manufacturing Institute, women cited the lack of flexibility and the lack of child care support as their top challenges, according to company leaders.
Meanwhile, women currently make up only 29% of the manufacturing workforce. According to the study, If the industry increased that share to 35%, manufacturers could fill the 746,000 job vacancies open today.
