Helping your HOS Adopt to 'Generative' Governance Principles
We typically talk about boards operating in one of three modes: fiduciary, strategic and generative. Boards are most familiar and comfortable operating in the first two areas but need practice and guidance on working in 'generative' mode.
How does generative mode differ from fiduciary mode? An example related to budget would be "is the budget on track for this year?' (fiduciary) vs "how does the budget align with the school's values and reflect the school's priorities?" (generative)
Not only does the board need to be very intentional about planning for generative board conversations, but your HOS also needs to be prepared to engage with the board in ways that may be different or uncomfortable if he/she is not accustomed to this. As Board Chair, you can help your HOS be more confident and ready for generative board conversations
Here are some principles from BoardSource that demonstrate how the HOS should be prepared for 'generative' board discussions:
- Ensure that nothing is ‘undiscussable’ in the boardroom.
- Not think they have all the right answers or even all the right questions.
- Invite dissent.
- Share information, power, and leadership opportunities.
- Not shy away from questions from the board- understand governance is a partnership.
- Not be completely wedded to the past or too far out in front on the board.
