Plant 23 Update

  • We fielded several questions the past few days pertaining to if we should be planting or not in front of this cold front.
  • Short answer is...yes if you planted, and yes if you decided to not plant.
  • One thing to note about this stretch of weather is we had amazing planting conditions and soil temps were warm leading up to the cold front.
  • 2-4 inch soil temperature at OSU western branch after the rain yesterday was still hovering at 55 degrees at 6pm.
  • You will also notice in the last 7 days we accumulated way more GDU's for this time of year compared to years past. (see chart below, ahead 19 units on average)
  • This lessons my concern for replant issues, because we know that the first 24-48 hours are very crucial for successful germination.
  • Most of everything planted this week should have accomplished this.
  • With that being said, next weeks forecast will put things at a standstill but I don't expect it to result in a fatal outcome for the crops.

Soybean Trait Flag Program

  • Don’t forget your trait flags!
  • It never fails, at least one field somewhere gets killed every year or issues with off target drift.
  • This is a simple step to potentially prevent this from happening. Or, it’s an easy system to show your neighbor what you are planting.
  • Learn more about how the trait flag program works and how you can participate in the video below.

Team Update

Join us in welcoming Austin McCafferty!

Austin McCafferty joined the Integrated Ag Services team in October as a soil sampler.

Austin received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from The Ohio State University and his Class A commercial driver's license from Clark State Community College.

His favorite farm technology is the combine.

Austin’s favorite season is Fall Harvest. “That’s where you get to see your hard work paid off.”

The best advice he’s ever received: “You can’t learn anything in the classroom that you can’t learn in the field.”
