Older American Month is here!
When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty, and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.

We are deeply dismayed to see that poverty increased among Americans age 65 and older from 8.9% in 2020 to 10.3% in 2021, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data. In fact, older adults are the only age segment that experienced an increase. The result is 1 million more older adults who rely on scarce resources to make ends meet. In total, almost 6 million older adults live below the poverty level. At the National Council on Aging, our goal is to ensure that every person can age with dignity, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. Learn more here.

Niki King,
VP of Silver Summit Health Plan

Niki Atcheson King is the Vice President of Community Solutions for SilverSummit Healthplan, a Nevada Medicaid health plan. SilverSummit is a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, the largest provider of government-sponsored health insurance in the nation.  Niki led the design and implementation of the Community Solutions department at the health plan. Functional areas within the department include the Housing, Justice Involved, and Health-Related Social Needs Interventions Programs, Community Investment Programs, Marketing and Communications, and Government Relations. As the leader of the Community Solutions Department, Niki is responsible for the development, management, and contracting of the Community Network. In partnership with this Network, the Community Solutions team ensures that SilverSummit Members with Health-Related Social Needs are identified and served, using evidence-based interventions that remove the social barriers to health care.  Niki and her team are also responsible for market growth.

Prior to joining SilverSummit, Niki worked in the Centene Business Development Department for five years and focused on assisting health plans with their Medicaid contract procurements. Niki, and the health plans with whom she partnered, have a 100%-win rate on procurements. This includes helping to secure a first-place contract win in Nevada for SilverSummit Healthplan.

Niki has spent the majority of her career serving the low-income population in Nevada. She is the co-founder of Access to Healthcare Network, where she remained the Chief Operating Officer for ten years. She also served as the Deputy Executive Director for the YWCA.

Niki is a proud fourth-generation Nevadan and a graduate of the University of Nevada. She resides in Reno with her husband and three children.
Janice Whaley,
(MPH, CPTC, CTBS) CEO Donor Network West

Janice F. Whaley serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Donor Network West, the second largest OPO in the U.S., joining the organization in January of 2019. After her arrival, the organization substantially increased organ recovery performance across multiple metrics, saving hundreds more lives. Her leadership, advocacy, and operational efforts, in northern California and northern Nevada as well as the nation overall, serve as evidence of her passion.

Prior to assuming the Chief Executive role at Donor Network West, Whaley held leadership and clinical roles in three other OPOs, achieving similar results. Whaley served as Chief Operating Officer of LifeShare of Oklahoma, essentially doubling the number of organ donors early on in her five-year tenure. Prior to her arrival at LifeShare, Whaley held the role of Managing Director of Clinical Operations at LifeGift in Houston, TX, where she managed the complex processes involved in working with 5 transplant centers and 24 transplant programs, leading the region to record setting numbers of donors recovered.

A committed advocate for donation, Whaley has served in multiple capacities on several donation and transplantation related national boards and committees, including serving as President of the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT), being appointed by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to serve as a faculty member for the 2012 National Learning Congress (NLC), appointed to serve on the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) Advisory Council on Transplantation (ACOT) and most recently appointed by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) as the Co-Chair of the Organ Recovery Collaborative Network (ORCN) ASTS/UNOS/AOPO Taskforce and in 2021 was recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business by the San Francisco Business Times.

Whaley received a Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a post graduate certificate from Harvard Business School, Executive Management Program. She graduated from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. Whaley is dually certified in organ and tissue recovery through ABTC and the AATB, respectively.

A Skin Patch to Treat Peanut Allergies? Study in Toddlers Shows Promise
An experimental skin patch is showing promise to treat toddlers who are highly allergic to peanuts — training their bodies to handle an accidental bite.
Peanut allergy is one of the most common and dangerous food allergies. Parents of allergic tots are constantly on guard against exposures that can turn birthday parties and play dates into emergency room visits.
