Rector's Note & Latest News

Note from the Rector

Dear Ascension Family,

In a week's time, the church will invite her faithful to observe a holy Lent. Ash Wednesday services will be held at 12 noon & 6 pm. Both services will include the Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion. The 12 noon service will stream live. Before you begin your Lenten fast, you are invited to join us on Shrove Tuesday for our annual Pancake Supper. This year we will have a special treat with Jambalaya prepared by our own Jeremy Downey of Bistro V. Invite your friends! All proceeds benefit our youth program.

In the Wednesdays following Ash Wednesday, we will gather for a meal and program in Ware Hall beginning at 5:30 p.m. Following supper, programs for adults, youth, and children will be offered. Mary Beth Basu will lead the adult discussion using a resource called Living Well through Lent. This year's theme is Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit. We have been intentional about reducing the number of other fellowship and educational opportunities during Lent as a way of encouraging the congregation to gather for this special Lenten program. I hope you'll make time together with us on Wednesdays during Lent. It could be one of your disciplines.

On Sunday mornings during Lent, the Adult Forum will explore a book called the Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth by Richard Foster. The book explores three types of disciplines: Inward, Outward, and Corporate. As always, reading is not required by helpful. I have ordered a few books for those who'd like to buy one through the church. Otherwise, you can purchase online on your e-reader. The class begins Sunday, March 9th at 9:30 a.m.

Finally, I ask your prayers and presence in worship this Sunday as we anticipate the annual visit of our diocesan bishop. Bishop G will make her final visit as diocesan bishop. In addition to preaching, she will baptize, confirm, and receive new members into the congregation. I hope you'll join us as we support our newest members in their life of faith.

Faithfully,

Jack+

Images of the Week

Members of the Ascension Gumbo Krewe pose for a photo after a historic day! Thanks to the leadership of Wyn Smith (head chef) and Christy Smith (spirit team lead) we brought home three pieces of hardware. We won Best Gumbo in the Backyard Division (non-professionals), Most Divine Gumbo (among churches), and placed 3rd for Most Spirit. Well done, team! The real winners, of course, was Episcopal Place. Episcopal Place provides low income housing for senior adults those adults with disabilities.

Pier 34 gather in Ware Hall on Sunday evening for Game Night! Games included: LIFE, Dominos, Hungry Hippos, Rummy, Apples to Apples, and Biblical Charades.
