Windows on the Bridge

Did you know that we have a "window" in the Overlook Garden that you can peer through and see a view of Chimney Rock? The 315 foot spire stands in Chimney Rock State Park, just named the Best State Park in North Carolina by Southern Living magazine in their The South's Best for 2023 issue. From the top of Chimney Rock, one can see our beautiful Hickory Nut Gorge.

We have a new "window" in the Sun Country Garden commemorating our 10th Anniversary. It provides an excellent photo op for visitors. Recently these two sisters, one from Hendersonville and the other from Atlanta, visited us to see our early spring blooms and took this photo to celebrate a birthday.

My Name Is Charlie

A special children's book is now part of our stone book collection.

Just like real books, the stone books found throughout our gardens help tell stories. Recently, Ike Keener revisited the Bridge, and after seeing the Clifford, The Big Red Dog stone book, he had an idea. He asked if we could create a stone book with the cover of a children's book his daughter, Elizabeth Keener, wrote about dog adoption from the dog's perspective. Always an animal lover, Elizabeth was inspired to write this book when she was 13, and part of the proceeds from the book have always been donated to no-kill animal shelters.

We were thrilled to add a stone book of this story, created by volunteer Becky Melton, to our collection, and you'll find it in the River's Edge Dog Garden. Read more about A.E. Keener here.

Receive a Letter from Our Elf

Help us welcome L.L. Elf to his new home! When L.L. visited last summer, he declared that the LLFB was the "most magical place." He met several faeries and bunnies, and decided to build himself a home here. With the help of local artist and volunteer Michelle Kreitman and her husband, Eric, L.L. moved into his new home at Christmas.

L.L. is employed by Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus and during the winter, he forwards letters to the North Pole from his mailbox under the stump of his house. During summer he helps our volunteers and answers general questions that are left in his mailbox.

You will find L.L.'s house in the stump on the west end of the Bridge next to the Kiosk.

L.L. supplies letter writing materials for you to leave him a note when you visit. He naps a lot during the day, but his house is lit at night and if you are lucky, you might see him at his desk thoughtfully answering letters.

As you can see, he has been very busy responding to the notes he's already received. He has his own stationery so watch your mailbox for his reply!

Mr. McGregor Says...

Hey kids, look who spent some time in my garden recently! It's Daisy, the traveling duck. Daisy is part of our Daffy Ducks feature and she likes to hide out in different parts of our gardens. See if you can find her when you visit.

Daisy plans to continue hanging out in our gardens even after all her other daffy friends leave for the season!

Friends of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is a volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations to help preserve and maintain the Bridge gardens and to support our new Education Center are always appreciated – and tax-deductible.
