Dear CHT Member,

The Elmwood Community Shelter is open and operating! We have a great team working around the clock ensuring that people are safe and secure and are supported with services. Each night, staff share with me the mostly positives (and some negatives) of the day. Overall, things are going well.

We all know that we won't solve the challenge of homelessness without creating more housing options for people. Construction will begin soon to transform the Ho Hum, a former motel on Williston Road in South Burlington, into 20 permanent homes with services for people who have been unhoused. In 2020, CHT purchased the property as part of our pandemic response supporting Vermont's need for a quarantine and isolation motel for people who were experiencing homelessness with this goal in mind. The new homes will be named Braeburn Apartments. CHT continues to make progress on creating new affordable housing in Colchester, Shelburne, and downtown Burlington.

At the Annual Meeting in January new Board member Lisa Lord was elected and Gillian Nanton and Helen Head were re-elected to new terms. Check out what inspires them to serve on our Board!

CHT is honored once again to be recognized as one of the Best Places to Work in Vermont. As you’ve heard me say, our staff are our greatest assets, and their work inspires me every day. As our Maintenance Team's motto says: Team Work makes the Dream Work!

We have job openings – check them out consider applying if you like working with fantastic and talented people!

By the time you are reading this, there will be as much sun as there is darkness, enjoy this season!

New Apartments in South Burlington
This month CHT begins construction on 20 one-bedroom apartments at the former Ho Hum Motel on Williston Road in South Burlington. Purchased in 2020 and repurposed to support the State's pandemic relief efforts into an isolation and quarantine motel for people experiencing homelessness, we are now embarking on the property’s next chapter: permanent housing with services for people who have been unhoused. This conversion will cost less than half what it would to build 20 new apartments from scratch. The new homes will be named Braeburn Apartments and will be ready for occupancy in September or October, 2023.

Meet our Newly Elected Board Members
At the 2023 Champlain Housing Trust Annual Meeting in January, members elected Lisa Lord to a first term as a resident Board member. Gillian Nanton and Helen Head were re-elected to second terms as public members of the Board. Click to read in their own words why they wanted to be members of CHT's Board of Directors.
