Nursing Community

Celebrating diversity in nursing: WCN's new videos

Did you know that 20.5% of people in Washington speak a language other than English at home?

A recent 2024 diversity snapshot from the Washington Center for Nursing revealed that while 38% of Washington’s population identifies as non-white, only 23% of our state's registered nurses reflect that diversity. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, a more diverse nursing workforce builds stronger trust between patients and healthcare providers.

To celebrate the vital role of bilingual nurses, WCN has created a series of videos sharing the inspiring stories of bilingual nurses in Washington. These videos highlight the challenges they've faced and their passion for nursing and community care. The hope is for these stories to encourage more diverse individuals in pursing nursing careers and help foster culturally competent care for everyone.

You can view these videos on the WCN webiste or by clicking here.

It wasn't just one thing....A nurses' perspective

It wasn’t just one thing – it was a thousand little things.

It was the limp masks that were used over and over.

It was the patients who suffered alone in their rooms.

It was the goggles constantly fogging up with tears.

It was a president who refused to acknowledge the severity of the situation.

It was the people waiting in line, begging for leftover vaccine.

It was the raw fear of passing on the virus to those most vulnerable.

It was the uphill battle to correct misinformation.

It was the lack of time to grieve each passing.

It was the exhaustion of triaging and making impossible choices.

It wasn’t just one thing – it was a thousand little things.

And the weight of it nearly crushed us.
