MISSION MOMENTS

KNOWING THE SIGNS

Ranay is a survivor who lived in fear throughout her six-year marriage. After her divorce, she started counseling at the Crisis Center. Ranay’s therapist helped her through the healing process, building self-esteem, and taught her about domestic violence. She learned about the role that power and control play in an abuser’s life, and how to identify the warning signs. Ranay had a follow-up call with her counselor. She was able to identify red flags with a man that she had seen on a few dates because of what she learned in counseling. She had the courage and conviction to end that relationship, proud that she was able to spot the signs and walk away.

VALENTINE LOVE

Tim O’Keefe from O’Keefe Associates is a member of our Dianne Masters Society (donors who give $1,000 or more annually). On Valentine’s Day, Tim received a card created by one of our shelter clients expressing our gratitude for his support. He was touched by the card and in response sent in another large gift. Thank you, Tim! We appreciate you and LOVE all of our donors!

Passport to Adventure Annual Gala

On February 25th almost 450 people gathered at the Odyssey Country Club to raise funds for the Crisis Center. As part of the Passport to Adventure gala theme, the event was touted as “A Royal Ball” and featured décor and inspiration from England. Before the doors even opened for the night, over $110,000 had been raised from sponsorships and donations.

This year, the event was chaired by three current Board members: Jennifer Kanacki (Board President), Katie Abbott (past President) and Derrick Lott. Our other chairs, Kathy Waller and Susan Frangella, helped create an amazing silent auction and raffle.

Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, Exelon, and all of our sponsors, who helped us make the event so successful. We are also grateful to our auction donors and everyone who contributed to the success of our Fund-a-Need auction, which raised $71,000!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! We hope you can join us next year on February 24, 2024, as our Passport to Adventure takes us to SPAIN!

Staff Spotlight

Eva Naser

Eva Naser wears two hats at the Crisis Center. She works as an advocate with our Live Safe Program at Advocate Christ Hospital. In this role, she provides safety screenings to patients to determine if they are engaged in a domestic violence situation and may need assistance, support, or referrals. Advocates can also complete intake forms if a patient is seeking safe shelter at our Emergency Residential Shelter

Eva is also a PAIP facilitator (Partner Abuse Intervention Program) and provides training and intervention to abusers to help them accept responsibility for their actions and better understand the cycle of violence and the role they play in it.

Eva is committed to the mission of the Crisis Center. She has coordinated collection drives, served as an Arabic translator for program staff and regularly speaks about our services at mosques in the Arabic community.

INVEST IN OUR MISSION

We are grateful to the students at Cardinal Joseph Bernadin Catholic School, who participated in their annual Penny Wars competition during Catholic Schools Week. Crisis Center for South Suburbia is honored to accept their donation.

Congrats to our partners, Zelda's Kitchen Witches, and their amazing Board of Directors for hosting an incredible recognition event. Volunteers from the organization donate new kitchen items and stock all of the kitchens in our community-based apartments with needed household supplies.

Everyone at the shelter felt loved on Valentine’s Day! Volunteers from Outreach Ministry of Refresh, a Power House Church located in Harvey, and Divine #9 Order of the Eastern Star donated goodie bags for everyone.

Jon and Claire Leegard of Molly Maid in Tinley Park hosted their annual drive to collect baby items and monetary gifts to support our mission.
