Once a booming tourist attraction the Salton Sea is now nearly dried up and abandoned but not forgotten.
The accidental creation of the endorheic artificial lake called the Salton Sea was one of the motivating factors that led to the building of a series of dams on the Colorado River. In 1905, during an overflow of a crudely built canal, the Colorado River poured into the dry desert basin of the Inland Empire. Without an outlet the basin continued to fill and soon the Salton Sea was born.
