MONDAY MEMO
Retired teacher and Riverside grandparent Allee kept up her tradition of knitting mittens for younger students, and presented each of the 1st and 2nd graders with a new, custom pair. Pictured in the back row are: Weldon, Lauren, Cassius, Arden; and front row: Olin, Hannah, Cora, Vivian, and Riley. Thank you Allee!
Hello {First Name},

Here is our last Monday Memo of 2023! We look forward to seeing many 3-8th parents in Assembly this week if it works in your schedule to hear those students' mythology presentations.

Happy Monday,

MYTHOLOGY DAY
This Wednesday, December 20 will be our annual Mythology Day celebration. We will have a special schedule for the whole school, with students rotating by house through a variety of activities led by the 8th graders. It is the half day before the holiday vacation, and so early dismissal will be at 12:30 for all PK-8th graders at Riverside.

Students will be presenting in morning Assemblies this week, and parents are encouraged to attend if their schedules allow (sorry for the misinformation in this schedule last week):
  • Tuesday: 3rd-4th graders will be presenting skits about classical myths; AND 5th graders will give individual speeches about mythological characters
  • Wednesday: 6-8th graders will give individual speeches about mythological characters

At the end of the day on Wednesday, all K-8th graders will participate in the "Urn of Fate," a classically themed gift exchange. Each student should bring in a simple, wrapped gift (a guideline for the value being $5 or less), by Tuesday the 19th and give them to Jamie (K-2nd grade gifts), Hanna (3rd-5th gifts), or Nathan (6th-8th gifts). This year we will continue exchanging gifts in these groups, so you can find something appealing to a student of similar age: K-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-8th.
HALF DAY WEDNESDAY
As always on the day before a school vacation, there will be an early dismissal on Wednesday at 12:30 for all PK-8th graders at Riverside.

The Preschool Afterschool program will run until 4:15. Please email McKenna if your child will be staying and let her know when you plan to pick up.

The K-8 Extended Day Program will run until 5:00. Please email Sean if your child will be styaing and let him know when you plan to pick up.
SKIING AND RIDING IN JANUARY
Thank you to everyone for attending to the many forms and communication related to our three skiing/riding programs on Friday afternoons in January and February. Those dates will be January 12, 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16. Note that we will have a regular day at school on our first Friday after the vacation, January 5. Some more details:

K-8 Downhill Ski/Ride at Burke Mountain
  • Equipment: If you have your own, please take the time this month to be sure that it still fits and is fully functional. Consider getting a tune-up at the resort or one of the local shops. If you need to replace anything, we suggest the Burke PTO Ski Shop in West Burke, through personal appointment. Season leases from VSS should be finalized by now, unless your child's fitting happened here at school, in which case that equipment will be available for pick up soon. Daily rentals from Burke Mountain are only available to those who completed paperwork and were fitted here at school in November.
  • Fees: Lift tickets and lessons for students are included in Riverside's tuition. Those of you who have season passes save Riverside that cost. We are grateful and hope we have accurate information. Please let Nelia know of any changes. Daily rental fees of $10-15 and chaperone lift tickets of $10 will be applied to your school store account.
  • Chaperones: If you haven't already, please complete the form Nelia emailed last week to help clarify your specific availability and preferences.
  • Pick Up: Plan to find your child in the lower level of the base lodge at 3:30, unless you gave permission for them to ski unsupervised until the lifts close at 4:00. Riverside teachers will not be supervising students in the lodge after 3:45.
  • Questions: Email Nelia, who is coordinating the program.

K-8 Cross Country at Dashney Trails
  • Equipment: If you have your own, please take the time this month to be sure that it still fits and is fully functional. Consider getting a tune up at the resort or one of the local shops. If you need to rent from Northwoods at Dashney instead, please let Joel or Caroline know.
  • Fees: Trail fees are included in Riverside's tuition. Daily rental fees of $10 will be applied to your school store account.
  • Chaperones: Expect an email from Joel and/or Caroline later this month. If you'd like to participate and you're not sure they know that, please email them ASAP.
  • Pick Up: Plan to find your child at the Cross Country Center operated by Northwoods Stewardship Center at the Dashney Trail system at 3:15.
  • Questions: Email Joel and Caroline, who are coordinating the program.

FRENCH OPPORTUNITY
Retired K-8 teacher Jack Chase is hosting a French club from 11am-12pm on Saturdays at the Cobleigh Public Library in Lyndonville. This is a great opportunity for Riverside 4-8th graders who will be going to Quebec on our Spring Field Trip this year! If you, or anyone in you know, would like to attend, we will be restarting after the holidays on January 6th. It's open to anyone of any level of French. Email Jack with questions.
ANNUAL APPEAL
We are sincerely grateful for the numerous ways in which Riverside Families contribute to the health of our school. As you've read in previous Memos, we rely on the current parent community to organize fundraisers to help bridge the gap between tuition and expenses. We notice and appreciate the hours of time and expertise that all parents give in their work on committees, baking, volunteering, substitute teaching, chaperoning, gardening, painting, and more.

Our other key strategy in raising the income we need is our Annual Fund, an appeal for which goes out to almost everyone we know. While we'd like you to consider the size of your gift as it relates to the difference Riverside makes in your lives and your other philanthropy, what matters most is simply your participation. There is no gift that is too small. If you haven't already, please consider making a gift to Riverside today.
