Dear Friends of The Heart Leaf Center:

We are asking today for your support to help hundreds of children access affordable mental health therapy.

You can make a

difference towards the healing of children and families in

Northern Virginia!

How do we approach children’s mental health?

We specialize in play therapy which is a way of being with the child that honors their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping children by using their language, “play”. Play Therapy provides a safe relationship helping young clients, most often ages 3 to 12 years, better express themselves and resolve difficulties to achieve optimal growth and development.

What difference are we making?

Our methods of play therapy are trauma-informed, sensitive to cultural implications, and lead to successful outcomes.

We measure outcomes using the Ohio Youth Problems Functioning and Satisfaction Scales, parent report survey. Results thus far show:

  • 38% decrease in problem severity at discharge
  • 21% increase in level of functioning at discharge
  • 93% satisfaction after six months

This is what our clients are saying about The Heart Leaf Center

"The past 18 months we've worked with The Heart Leaf Center have made a world of difference for both our child and family. She is now able to access many things in her life where her anxiety has become a burden. School and activities have become more enjoyable and we've been given needed guidance on communicating with her school any needs she has. Our family would truly be in more turbulent waters if we hadn't received this help. The Heart Leaf Center has been the life-line we needed.”

“We are very appreciative of all they have done for our child and our family. It’s amazing how much our child enjoys going there and how they keep the parents involved in the process.”

“We were concerned with our child’s behavior and the temper has been reduced dramatically. This has been a great experience.”

“I was curious as to what play therapy was and how it would help my child. My son's behavior has started to improve in just a few weeks.”

We have had an easier time communicating with each other.”

Value of Play Therapy-Before: Thought it was for mostly toddlers/had no other thoughts about it. During: Found it interesting/questioned it's effectiveness/but found it beneficial to the kids. After: Find it very beneficial to the kids and family as a whole/realize it as a legitimate form of therapy.”

How long does a child need Play Therapy treatment?

Recent research indicates that on average 15 to 20 sessions are required for 50% of clients to recover as indicated by self-reported symptom measures. However, for children with more complex and chronic issues up to 40 to 60 sessions may be required.

In 2023 THLC we served more than 200 children and families.

You can buy a session package or simply click here to donate. Any amount is helpful in providing needed counseling for children and families.

20 play therapy sessions=$1,500

40 play therapy sessions=$3,000

60 play therapy sessions=$4,500

You can multiply the impact of your donation by spreading the word about The Heart Leaf Center. Help us keep the trend going by passing along this message to others who share our commitment for mental health for children and families.

A heartfelt thanks,
