From Rev. Brock Patterson
“Happy or Sad?”
The traffic on and off the island is finally beginning to wane. For area residents, this is a positive sign. Many of us have delayed our errands, shopping needs, and appointments until the travel times decreased.
Some of us are looking forward to less-crowded parking lots, allowing us to reclaim our favorite parking spots much closer to our destinations. The prices of theme parks, zoos, and other attractions will decrease dramatically, making it a little more affordable for us to attend them. For those of us who are employed, our workloads will finally lighten and it will be easier for our own family and friends to visit.
However, though celebrated by many, the appearance of car carriers on the island also causes sorrow. For those who are transferring their keys to the truck drivers, they recognize that their departure means that they won’t be able to gaze upon the crystal-blue gulf waters for quite some time. They’ll miss the tropical breezes, scenic walks, and amazing sunsets that so frequently quench their thirst.
Those of us left behind will also experience sadness. Our northern friends won’t be able to watch the sunset with us in the evenings. The parties won’t happen and the large gathering places will soon echo with a deafening silence. Our scenic bike rides with friends and our walks along the beach will feel lacking and lonely.
As the closing of “The Season” is upon us, we permanent residents will be happy for a couple of reasons. For the most part, however, we’re gonna’ be sad because our friends will be somewhere else for the next six months. We will miss all of them plenty. Though we can stay connected through things like social media, Livestream, and Zoom, it’s not the same without them here.
If you’re among those who are temporarily departing us, we pray that you have safe travels back to your northern retreats. We also pray that you stay safe and healthy while you’re away. In the meantime, we’ll keep the lights on for you and we’ll be eagerly awaiting your return!
We love you! See you this Sunday. If not in person, we’ll see you online!
God Bless. Brock
"In the same way, you have sorrow now; but I will see you again, and you will be overjoyed. No one takes away your joy." (John 16:22, CEB)
