FAST: Our sole mission is a cure

Hi Cure,

This Sunday we hosted “Learn FAST”: A science webinar for kids – and it was a huge success!

If you and your family missed it, we’re planning to offer it again in the fall — stay tuned.

If you have updates you would like to be included in next week’s newsletter, please email us at info@cureangelman.org.

Science Update: Terms to Know

Science Update: Terms to Know - Outcome Measure: a test used to determine if a treatment or therapeutic had some sort of effect on an individual.

Being a part of the Angelman syndrome community, you are often inundated with unfamiliar scientific jargon. To clarify some of these terms and contribute to the education of our community, the FAST team has decided to initiate a series of newsletter pieces discussing the complicated language frequently associated with AS.

Our first term is: outcome measure

Definition: An outcome measure is a test used to determine if a treatment or therapeutic had some sort of effect on an individual.

FAST was honored to be invited to give Grand Rounds to the Department of Pediatric and Genetics at Yale University this week. Dr. Allyson Berent, FAST’s chief science officer, stood in front of a room of doctors providing them a view of rare disease through the lens of parents working tirelessly towards a cure for their loved ones with Angelman syndrome.

CAN Spotlight: The Cutler family

CAN Spotlight: The Cutler family, with a photo of Matt and Jennifer Cutler

On June 15, 2020, Jennifer and Matt Cutler, parents of Charlie, received the life-changing news that their daughter has Angelman syndrome. A year later, they hosted their first annual “Charlie’s Angels Chari-Tee Golf Tournament” to benefit FAST. This year will be their 3rd annual event as they continue to fundraise to support the mission of FAST and a brighter future for the AS community.

“Living with a child that has Angelman syndrome brings so many challenges, and while we often struggle in the day to day, we need to be also working for her future as well. Charlie deserves a better future, a more independent life, and so much more. We know what causes Angelman syndrome, and we are counting on FAST to help find meaningful therapeutics to give Charlie and everyone living with Angelman syndrome a better future. They all deserve it!"
