BOOK CLUB

Wednesday, May 17 @ 7:30 PM

At this month's meeting of the book club we will discuss The Years by Annie Ernaux. Winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in literature, The Years is a personal narrative of the period 1941 to 2006 told through the lens of memory, impressions past and present -- even projections into the future -- photos, books, songs, radio, television and decades of advertising, headlines, contrasted with intimate conflicts and writing notes from six decades of diaries.

If you're interested in joining the conversation this month, please contact the Book Club Coordinator Sally Smith '64 via email.

It's very important that we get a headcount for this event. Club members have already received an Evite (on March 31 if you need to find it in your inbox) and we have listed this event on our Facebook page. Please help us spread the word!

About the Speaker

Many of Professor Caris’s initiatives build upon the notion of making invisible, visible. He enjoys creating conditions that afford opportunity to see through a spatial lens, prompting new questions and discussion. Primarily trained as a geographer and environmental planner, Professor Caris received a M.S. in Geo-Environmental Studies from Shippensburg University and a B.A. in Geography from SUNY Geneseo.

IN MEMORIUM - JEAN DAVIDSON '73

It is with profound regret that we report the death of Jean Ann Kunkel Davidson ‘73 on Monday, April 10, following a gallant fight against cancer.

Jean was a longtime member of the Smith Club, and more. About twelve years ago, she took the initiative to rebuild the Club’s board, which had shrunk to only a few members. Repeatedly hosting organizational meetings, she recruited Smithies to fill the empty positions—and in the process, she rescued our 502(c)(3) status, which was about to expire. Once the Board leadership was on course, she continued to serve as treasurer and eminence grise, providing institutional memory, lawyerly guidance and Board mentoring in addition to fiscal responsibility until she retired from the Board in 2020. She generously offered her home for club events and was a mainstay of the book club as well. She will be dearly missed.

PAST EVENTS: APRIL

Student Care Packages - April 1

A group of us met at Nirvana Soul in Cupertino on a lovely Saturday to assemble these sweet little care packages for the 25 Peninsula Bay Area students currently on campus at Smith. We stuffed small glass jars with candy and an origami craft and included a note on the gift bag to let the students know that we're back home rooting for them. As a club we gather for these micro-volunteer events twice a year -- a great way to meet your fellow local alums and be involved in the club without a big time commitment. Keep an eye out for the next one this Fall!

Admitted Students Tea - April 8

What a beautiful day to meet some new and potential Smithies. THANK YOU to all those alums who joined us to answer questions, field concerns, and share personal experiences to TEN newly admitted students and their parents. Half of the students had already accepted their Smith College offers, and the others were still weighing their options. An extra, enormous THANK YOU to Donna Dong for opening her home and hosting this event for the 25 people who showed up, far surpassing our expectations!
