National School Lunch Week

October 9-13, 2023

Even though National School Lunch Week was declared in 1962, the National School Lunch Program goes back even further, back to 1946. Created to provide nutritious meals to children from low-income families who might not otherwise have access to a daily meal, NSLP ensures the health and well-being of all public school students, boosts academic performance by giving students the fuel they need to succeed, and closes the opportunity gap for children across the country. Today, the National School Lunch Program serves nearly 30 million children every school day. Not only does it reduce childhood hunger, but it also supports American agriculture.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes place in October every year. It began in 1985 as a week-long event and was championed by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries. Betty Ford, who was diagnosed with breast cancer while her husband Gerald was president, helped launch the event. Organizers set up national and local events all over the country every October.

Candy Quest: Finding the Sweet Spot of Moderation this Halloween

We all love the fun and excitement of Halloween, especially when it comes to candy! Even though I am in high school, I still enjoy the thrill of trick or treating with my friends, getting candy, and enjoying my favorite sour patch kids!   But have you ever thought about the importance of enjoying those sweet treats in moderation? Eating too many candies at once can give you a sugar rush, making you feel super energetic for a short while, but then leaving you tired and moody when it wears off.  Having too much candy can lead to cavities. Eating too much candy decreases our appetite and prevents us from getting the essential nutrients we need to grow from the basic food groups including fruits and vegetables.

The key is to think of moderation as being part of your personal balance. Just like balancing homework, friends, and hobbies, it's essential to find a balance in what you eat. Enjoying some candy during Halloween is totally okay, but going overboard can have long-term effects, like gaining unwanted weight or feeling sluggish. So, when diving into that Halloween candy stash, remember to enjoy it a little at a time. It'll make the fun last longer and keep you feeling great!

To keep your teeth happy and healthy, follow these tips:

 1. Brush and Floss: After eating candy, always remember to brush your teeth. If you can't brush right away, try to rinse your mouth with water. And don't forget to floss to get rid of any candy bits stuck between your teeth.

2. Choose Wisely: Some candies are tougher on teeth than others. Sticky or gummy candies cling to teeth longer, so it's better to have chocolates that melt away quickly.

3.Drink Water: Drinking water throughout the day helps to rinse away sugar and keep your mouth clean.

4. Remember to stay active; eating extra candy leads to unwanted calories, so increasing or maintaining your activity level can help avoid empty calorie intake.
