DECEMBER 2024 NEWS

An exhibit of all 275 Americans Who Tell the Truth portraits by artist Robert Shetterly opened last month at the new Bates Mill Complex in Lewiston, Maine. (Runs thru 12/14) The documentary film Truth Tellers will be shown Saturdays at noon (12/7 and 12/14).

A few portrait subjects at the exhibit opening. Veterans for Peace founder, Doug Rawlings, focused on six that particularly resonate for him: Colonel Ann Wright, Cindy Sheehan, Daniel Ellsberg, and Philip Berrigan. These portraits are among 50 in Shetterly's new book, Portraits of Peacemakers.

Penobscot and Passamaquoddy tribal member, Sherri Mitchell (right) noted the significance of Shetterly’s work: “He has done more for the advancement of women’s rights, black rights, indigenous rights, and environmental justice than any other person I know, and he has done that by amplifying the work of those who are doing that work in the world.” Mitchell went on to reflect on who among us is told they have no place in our society and to challenge attendees to take steps to heal the divides and protect the vulnerable.

Women Writers, Women's Books

has just published Alice Rothchild's account of how she came to write Inspired and Outraged.

"Poetry gave me the power to be deadly serious, outraged, sarcastic, playful, capturing the mood of each encounter, explaining in metaphor and glancing suggestion something that would require a whole chapter to describe in prose."

The Women's History Network has published excerpts from Inspired and Outraged that are annotated by Alice herself.

"Politics is always personal, and the lessons learned are easily forgotten by subsequent generations. I hope my poetry touches the heart as well as the mind and inspires outrage that leads to a striving for social justice and political action in this very troubled world, both for women and for the people who love and support them."

Author Alice Rothchild spoke with host Jesse King:

"The current generations of young women and people in their thirties and forties probably don't know much of this history, and if we don't understand our history and the struggles we went through, and we in some ways let our guard down, we will lose the progress we've made."

Mindy Thompson Fullilove interviewed by NEXTpittsburgh

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the book Root Shock, NEXTpittsburgh caught up with author Mindy Thompson Fullilove.

"I defined root shock as the loss, the destruction, of all or part of one’s emotional ecosystem. So you’d have to say the weather is part of our emotional ecosystem and we’ve all lost the weather that we knew. The climate has shifted and that means that 8 billion people have root shock."

Tom Angotti reviews Creative Instigation for Progressive City

"This is a sterling example of what I call slow planning, the necessary substitute for the assembly-line speedups of the community planning process that justify decisions already made by investors, bondholders and their technocratic allies."
