Did you know?

In 2021, there were 259 crashes involving pedestrians in Marion County. Of those incidents, 158, or 61%, were fatal or incapacitating.

The Marion County Pedestrian Crash Data report investigates trends throughout these crashes, their impact, and areas for improvement in reporting and analysis as we work toward Vision Zero in Indiana.

Senate Bill 233 Update

Senate Bill 233, establishing a statewide Vision Zero task force, is scheduled to go before the full Indiana Senate for a third reading/final vote tomorrow, Thursday, 2/23.

If passed, the task force would make recommendations on reducing and preventing fatalities on roads and highways, along with addressing other driving safety issues in Indiana. SB 233 would have a statewide impact that would benefit all modes of transportation through reducing roadway fatalities.

Please contact your state senator (find them here) and voice your support for SB 233 and safer roads for all Hoosiers! Don’t hesitate to let us know of any questions.

Seeking Safe Routes to Schools Partners!

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a way to create lifelong habits for a healthy and active lifestyle in our children.

SRTS is a national program to encourage students and families to use active modes of transportation to get to and from school. This usually means walking or biking, but it can be other forms of active transportation depending on the community.

The new SRTS program in Indiana is designed to support schools in their efforts to establish formal SRTS programs and policies by:

  • Gathering information about the school population and community to determine what routes are safe and what needs to be done to create more safe routes.
  • Creating activities that encourage families to try these active modes of transportation to school.
  • Generate ongoing plans for continuing and expanding participation in SRTS

Health by Design is seeking partner schools interested in implementing SRTS strategies in your community! Our team will work with you to build a program that creates some quick successes in order to generate momentum and keep things (and students!) moving.

Services we can offer are educational workshops, support to establish or build a local program, and technical assistance to conduct assessment of local conditions and infrastructure. We may also be able to provide funding to do some engagement and encouragement activities.

We are looking for schools that want to create or grow a program that promotes active transportation as a way to get to school. Interested? Reach out to Damon Richards (drichards@hbdin.org) to start a conversation!
