The 2021 IBC introduces significant changes affecting most building types, except small homes and townhouses. Notable updates include the regulation of puzzle rooms, separate consideration of building portions divided by fire walls for control areas, enhanced classroom acoustics in Group E occupancies, simplified rules for metal composite materials, specific provisions for using intermodal shipping containers, mandatory sprinklers in large open parking garages, adoption of the 2017 ICC A117.1 edition, requirements for parapets on aggregate-surfaced roofs, revised snow maps, updated secondary rain loads, special inspections for mass timber elements, new frost protection for egress doors, and the introduction of three new mass timber construction types for taller, multi-story buildings with increased allowable areas.
