Did you know, the term Skyscraper originates from the term for a small, triangular-shaped sail? This sail was set above the sails on the old square-rigged vessels. They were so tall that they seemed to scrape the sky!

The month of March brings an hour more of sunlight and what better way to celebrate than going outside? We highly encourage you to visit the California Canoe and Kayak or Spinnaker Sailing on our beautiful Port waterfront for fun events and classes. Maybe you are interested in joining the Sequoia Yacht Club, for waterfront comradery, sailing regattas and activities. They each have everything from day events to mini trips around the Bay Area!

California Ports Day 2023, an annual day of advocacy for the widespread benefits our ports provide for the state and country, was a huge success and brought with it a positive new study. This study confirmed and expanded upon the economic impact the California ports have on the U.S. We are happy to be a part of this successful industry and see the benefits of it first-hand. Read more below about the latest news to come from this important day.

I’m also pleased to share that we are entering into the next phase of the Redwood City Ferry Terminal project. By the end of March, we will have selected a consultant firm for the project and reached an agreement to move into CEQA, which is the necessary environmental review for the project to move forward.

Thank you for following Port news and updates. We encourage you to follow us on social media for additional updates.

Warm Regards,

California Ports Provide Boost to Economy

February 15, 2023 celebrated California Ports Day with the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA) recognizing the significant impact California’s ports have on the state’s economy. Starting in 2018, CAPA Port's Day is an annual event at the State Capitol with port authorities thanking state legislators and advocating for the vast benefits California’s 11 main ports provide.

As part of the day, CAPA announced a new economic impact study focused on the positive fiscal impact California’s ports bring to the State. The findings were tied to cargo and trade value, jobs, workforce development and tax revenue. The Port of Redwood City is a further example of job creation and a positive economic driver for our region. Our maritime industry provides high paying diverse jobs, balance with environmental stewardship.

The study concluded an estimated 3.1 million jobs are supported by the California ports and the business, generating $38.1 billion in tax revenue. Just another reason to love California ports!

Redwood City Ferry Terminal Project Update

The Redwood City Ferry Terminal Project is creating a public ferry service from downtown San Francisco or Oakland to Redwood City, thus extending the San Francisco Bay Ferry system. This will open alternative forms of commuting, lighten automobile traffic and expand the Port's emergency preparedness system. Participants will be able to get to San Francisco and the East Bay in one hour and can use their Clipper Cards for payment.

The next steps in the process include environmental review and permitting with the selection of a consultant team at an upcoming Board meeting.

Last, but not least, don't forget to complete the San Francisco Bay Ferry 2050 survey. By taking part in the survey, you'll help drive the future of the SF Ferry and how they can best serve their residents. Participants are automatically entered into a drawing for prizes.

As always, we would like to thank the Water Emergency Transportation Authority for their continued support and partnership in this project.
