Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making other intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.

UPDATE: Westbound Route 7 Lane Shift to New Difficult Run Bridge During the Overnight Hours on May 10

Includes traffic pattern changes at side streets

The traffic shift previously scheduled for the night of Thursday, May 4, has been rescheduled for the night of Wednesday, May 10. Drivers on westbound Route 7 will experience a lane shift to the north from Middleton Ridge Road to approximately 1,000 feet west of Carpers Farm Way as traffic is shifted to the new westbound Route 7 bridge over Difficult Run.

  • Faulkner Drive will open to outgoing traffic to westbound Route 7. Drivers on westbound Route 7 to Locust Hill Drive will continue to use the established detour route on Forestville Drive/Fairpine Lane/Trotting Horse Lane.
  • Drivers on westbound Route 7 to Serenity Woods Lane will proceed to Colvin Run Road/Carpers Farm Way and U-turn to eastbound Route 7 for access to Serenity Woods Lane. This is a permanent change in the roadway configuration.

Lane closures on Route 7 will be in place through the work area during the overnight hours. See maps below for details.

Please use caution and be alert to vehicles and equipment entering and exiting the work area. All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

For information on intersection movements at the completion of the construction along Route 7, please see the interactive map on the project website.

Please note crews are only working within the VDOT right of way and where rights have been acquired from property owners (read more).

As a reminder, the Route 7 speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour in active work zones between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive, and Virginia law prohibits the use of handheld cell phones while driving through an active work zone.

Please use caution and be alert to work zone signs, potential flagger or police direction, and watch for traffic shifts. Slow-moving vehicles and equipment may be entering or exiting the road.
