Parshat Tzav

In addition to a dearth of narrative in Sefer Vayikra, another unique dimension to the book is in its physical structure. Rashi points out in his commentary on the first pasuk that the white space you would see in a Sefer Torah which usually delineates between different topics actually interrupts passages speaking about the same subject! He explains that the purpose of the white space in Vayikra served an educational purpose. Hashem recognized the complexity of the laws and gave Moshe Rabbeinu the time and space to contemplate and absorb this new information. Rashi goes on to say that since Hashem did this for Moshe, all the more so a normal teacher to a normal student!

In contrast to the white space in Vayikra, the Gerrer Rebbe known as the Imrei Emet points to the lack of white space separating Parshat Vayigash from Parshat Vayechi. Rashi there explains that this represents the closing of the eyes and hearts of Bnei Yisrael as they descend into exile. The next time we see an unusual structure in the Chumash is in Shemot Chapter 15, where we are blinded by the plethora of white space in the structure of the song of the sea. The Imrei Emet notes that it was not until we crossed the sea on dry land and truly experienced freedom that our eyes and hearts were reopened.

High School Happenings

News from Kohelet Yeshiva

Our high school students and faculty had a special Chesed Day, where they went out into the community and volunteered their time to help others. The Chesed Day activities included:

  • Helping, sorting and organizing at the Philadelphia Diaper Bank warehouse
  • Maintenance, cleaning and trash pickup at the Parkside Evans Park
  • Organizing and preparing books to be mailed to inmates at the Books through Bars library
  • Sorting clothes and toys at the Cradles to Crayons warehouse
  • Volunteering at Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Ardmore
  • Organizing and categorizing donated books at BookSmiles
  • Volunteering in K-5 classes and during outdoor play at KYLS
  • Yard work, planting and maintenance at the Cynwyd Heritage Trail

There has been so much learning about Pesach and preparing for the upcoming Chag happening at KYLS, including an in-school Seder, writing Divrei Torah, making Haggadot, and a special matzah making activity for our K/1 students with Rav Yaakov.

We also had a lot of pre-Pesach Ivrit activities this week in KYLS! Our K/1 students made butterflies for spring and Chag Ha'Aviv, and our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders did a special activity all in Hebrew where they had a scavenger hunt to "find the Afikomen."

Congratulations to the Kohelet Kings! Our high school boys basketball team had a terrific showing at Yeshiva University’s Sarachek tournament, which featured 24 teams from around the country. The Kings made it all the way to the Tier III championship game and were cheered on by our 11th and 12th graders from the stands, and our 9th and 10th graders, our middle school students, and our 4/5 class, all of whom rooted for the team during special Kohelet Kings watch parties at school!
