The Courage to Speak Up and Seek Support

Miranda is a High School student who participates in sports and has a job. Miranda has a bubbly personality and has a great relationship with all her co-workers. Miranda’s supervisor, who is an adult, was someone who she looked up to. He was not only her supervisor but a mentor. Miranda struggled a little when he friended her on social media, however, he reassured her that it was okay, as he was friends online with all of her other co-workers. As time passed, Miranda’s supervisor became more friendly with her through social media. He began to groom Miranda, making her believe that their conversations were appropriate and that he had feelings for her. While at work one day, Miranda’s supervisor invited her to meet him in a private room, where he began to touch her inappropriately.

After a few weeks, Miranda shared with her mom what had happened. They reached out to Open Arms, where an advocate was able to help file a report with Law Enforcement. Charges were submitted to the Prosecutor, and Miranda’s supervisor was charged with Unlawful Sexual Conduct with a Minor. Throughout the criminal process, there were several discussions with Miranda, her family, the Prosecutor, and her advocate on how Miranda wanted to move forward with this case. While at the sentencing, Miranda was able to read her victim impact statement to the Court. The Judge was very direct with Miranda’s offender about the seriousness of his crime and how his relationship was inappropriate. He was sentenced to jail time and has to register as a Tier I Sex Offender for 15 years.

You Can Help

We will soon we be kicking off National Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, we are reaching out to local businesses to ask for your support in displaying our free informational clings at your business.

These clings provide vital details about the services we offer and include a QR code for discreet access to connect to Open Arms advocates and services. Ideally, they can be placed on the top or bottom corner of any public or employee bathroom mirrors.

By displaying these, you’ll help individuals access local support in a safe and confidential way. If you'd like to receive clings, please contact Roseanna Thornton at rthornton@openarmsfindlay.org or call 419-420-9261 ext. 0242.
