For most of its 100-mile course from the San Bernardino Mountains to Soda Lake in the middle of the Mojave Desert the Mojave River is mostly hidden underground. Suddenly appearing out of nowhere after a mountain rain when the bedrock forces the abundance of water to the surface.
The Mojave is one of few rivers that flow inland away from the ocean across San Bernardino County and is much larger at its source than at the drainage giving it the appearance of a backward river. Spanning more than 50,000 square miles the Mojave is home to the hottest, driest, and lowest places in North America, and the only significant riparian habitat is the western Mojave Desert.
