Silence, the Heart of Retreat
by Khalif Saladin Pelfrey
"O nature sublime, speak to me through silence,
for I am awaiting in silence like you the call of God."
-Hazrat Inayat Khan

Silence is the gift we always carry with us but we rarely take advantage of it and its gifts to us. It is said that in moments of deep silence alone, are the profound truths of existence unveiled, insights of our being occur, true peace is realized, the experience of time alters and even the revealing of prophecy.
Silence, when practiced even for brief periods, brings rest and renewal to our complete being. There is a vastness, a sanctuary, reminding our bodies and hearts to release, to surrender, and to give discovery to The Divine within.
Experiencing the silencing of our being begs for our surrendering in the moment, and as Hazrat Inayat Khan would describe, to raise the pitch of our hearts. Perhaps saying we fall in love as totally with the moment as we possibly can with this state when all the stillness within is loved... continue reading

Presential silence in practice is a means of deepening practice and allowing the divine to teach us. There are two words in the grammar of Sufism that support this, dhawq and sharb. Dhawq is to taste God. It is being present to what is Present in the heart, after articulating a zikr or a divine name. To taste, one has to pause outer activity, including articulation, and through silence be present to the divine response to the articulation. Allow the Divine One to communicate with you through Presence. Sharb is to drink God. Perhaps you have exercised under the sun for a long time and got dehydrated. When you drank that first water afterward every cell in your body joyously celebrated the fresh life. Life can be very dehydrating. And Spirit is what re-hydrates our soul! Sharb is to take a time after practice to sit in silence, to allow consciousness to be deeply informed and refreshed... continue reading

Excerpt from Pasi Anfas: Breath
Gatha with Commentary Series II Number 10
Communication Through the Breath
GATHA: Breath is the medium between the outer life and the inner life. By the help of breath the elements necessary for the body can be attracted and by the help of breath thoughts and inspiration can be gained. By the help of breath all that is undesirable in the body and mind can be expelled.
TASAWWUF: In the establishment of the Gatha classes it was thought advisable to read and then reread the papers. It usually takes much more than that to impress upon the consciousness that breath IS the medium between the inner and outer. It is not enough to know the myth and then the symbology of such matters as Jacob’s ladder. It takes a long time to impress people that when they have undesirable thoughts that these can often be expelled by powerful exhalations... continue reading excerpt

Letters (to Mansur) from Moineddin
Pir Moineddin Jablonski wrote a number of letters to Mansur Johnson between 1975 and 1980. The importance of this collection is that Pir Moineddin was the designated successor of Murshid Samuel L. Lewis...[who] was the recipient of the baraka, or blessing, of Hazrat Inayat Khan who introduced Sufism to the United States in the beginning of the 20th Century.
When Moineddin and Mansur met Samuel L. Lewis in the late 1960s, Lewis was beginning to receive the transmission of Sufi Dances. This expression of devotion and joy spread around the world and became known as the Dances of Universal Peace. For 30 years, Pir Moineddin guided this expression with wisdom and compassion while facing severe physical health challenges.
The intimate sharing between two friends, Moineddin and Mansur, forms the basis of this book. Click here to order

Dear family,
It’s been a heart filled gathering. Today's group picture (thanks to Subhan) shows Ananda and me holding bowls of chocolate candies. Thus we honor our Godmother Aziza Inayat Khan, who always brought candy for the children. As we are all ‘children of God.’ We brought them for us all. These will be thrown into the air so as to rain down as blessings. May the Message of God reach far and wide. (and bring sweetness to all open hearts) Portland awaits.
Blessings,
Hakim Sauluddin & Anandaji
